  3. The lesson to take away from here is that patent law destroys markets. Good to see this view in a semi-mainstream presentation.

    • It does stifle creativity, more so as patents are meant to protect the copying of physical items, machinery Etc., so contractors couldn’t be conned by clients into having their creations stolen and made cheaper by another company.

      They were never ever meant to put handcuffs on concepts.

      • Beyond the Utilitarian argument I think the deeper problem is that patent law is enforced by police violence. Imagine raiding an inventors home in the name of keeping someones business profitable. It sickens me.

  5. If I was world dictator, my 5th or 7th act would be that you can’t copyright single words that were already in English dictionaries before you were born.

    Also, the people that INVENTED frivolous lawsuits, the Ancient Greeks, believed that the tendancy to sue people too often was a mental disease. I would make that official.

    And to Tim Langdell;

    You make more money from sueing and bullying people for using a word you didn’t even invent than you do from actually making anything. Therefore, YOU SUCK!

  6. I always wondered why more games didn’t have min-games during the loading screen. As soon as you mentioned Namco, it immediately came back. I thought it was brilliant when I played RR, and only something so stupid as a patent on a generic idea could have caused this. You should have saved that one for last IMO. In fact, the detail gets more interesting nearing the end of the video, so I’m not sure if that was your intent.

    I never knew that there was a version of Altered Beast that was less than 16 bits.

  7. Not sure how enforced the Koei patent you talked is because I know Capcom’s Sengoku Basara is a mechanically similar game including the enemies you fight and amount.

    • Not sure if they butted heads before but I know the Sengoku game is as old as the PS2 and now on its 4th or 5th game(not really sure if the Utage game should count by its self since it is an updated version of 3) so I would imagine that if it was that enforceable the series wouldn’t have made it this far.

  10. There are still a lot of Beat’m’Ups released, they have just transitioned into 3D and added a few RPG elements. For instance the Dark Souls series being on of the most popular Beat’m’ups of all time.
