    Gee bullwinkle

  2. The film where IMO DeNiro officially stopped giving a damn. Seriously, look at the films he made before and after this one, and I swear the reception of them are mirror opposites.

    • So basically it is NC Is Sleepy Hollow Secretly Brilliant scenario here? People hate it because they didn’t get that author deliberately make it bad as brilliant reference to something previously bad? If I real similar things happen recently with Batman and Robin what is only really bad as part of franchise, on its own it is quite nice cheese feast reference to Batman LA-TV series.

      • NC never said Sleepy Hollow (the live action one) was brilliant. What he said was that Sleepy Hollow was a tribute to Hammer horror films, and how much you would like Sleepy Hollow would depend on how much you liked Hammer films.

    • He said he had fun with this movie cause he is a fan of the cartoon.

How dare you say The Big Bang Theory is a bad show. I hate it when he disses something I love.

    • The Real Silverstar

Yeah, poor you. How dare he have his own opinion on something. Just tar and feather the big meanie-pants.

Everybody is allowed to express their opinions however they see fit. Getting all upset and butt-raged because some content creator isn’t gaga over something you love is quite frankly kind of sad. Critics and reviewers have roasted things which I’ve enjoyed also, but they’re just giving their opinions. Reviewers are just people like you and me; they have their favorites and non-favorites and I have mine. Someone having a contrary opinion isn’t going to send my world crashing down around me or make me lose my respect for that person. The fact that you’re an adult and can’t handle criticism (from a CRITIC, of all people) shows that you still have a lot of growing up to do.

    • Haha look at all the hate.

Seriously…I think the Big Bang Theory is fun. I think most people who hate on this show can’t take a joke, and feel they’re being ridiculed. Well..I’m a nerd who loves sci-fi, Lord of the Rings, X-Men, anime, Steve Jobs and Neil DeGrasse Tyson…and I love when they reference the “geek” culture.

The actors are likable, the scenarios are light hearted, and it’s totally harmless.

      • Eh Big Bang hasn’t been enjoyable since Season 5

        • I like it but I also acknowledge fact that it is bad show which creators didn’t really know what nerd culture is. I’m personally sick of autistic people on interned who go rage when someone dare have opinion or worst.. point out that something isn’t objectively good despite such people liking it.

          • You have a good point, but there’s no need to call people “autistic” just for feeling a certain way. If you’re going to do that, you might as well cut the pretense and just call them “retarded”, which isn’t cool either.

          • Your poor choice of word made you fail at the Internet.

          • thatchickwithlonghair

Um…you DO know that the creators are nerds themselves, right? Big Bang has jokes only nerds would get.

      • I think the thing with The Big Bang Theory is it’s a matter of perspective. A lot of people hate it because they see the joke being that the main characters are geeks and that’s it, but I don’t see the show as a sit-com about geeks, I see it as a romantic-comedy sit-com where the main characters just happen to be geeks and the moments that stand out to me the most usually have nothing to do with pop-culture.

        • I hate it because of the utterly insufferable laugh track. I watched 5 minutes of one episode of that show, and I heard more dubbed in laughs, even after lines that *weren’t jokes*, than I’d ever heard in an entire episode of any other sitcom I’ve ever seen.

I wanted to give it a chance, but I literally could not bring myself to keep watching.

          • I actually will give you that. The laugh track does go bit overboard at times. I feel the same way for The Flintstones and old Scooby Doo despite the fact I quite enjoy the latter.

          • Laugh track? I thought they did the episodes live.

          • The laughs are from a studio audience that is live.

Yeah…it’s a bit much, and feels outdated, but the laughs are from actual people watching them act out the scenes live.

I’m not going to get too crazy defending the silly show, but I really think the main cast of actors are charismatic and have good chemistry. They’re having fun and it infects the live audience.

    • I love it too. I know it has some flaws and not all the jokes or scenarios fly (which is probably why it’s considered a bad show), but I have so much fun watching it. And that’s okay.

I guess 32 months is a pretty long time for something like suicide visuals to be too soon. And that’s alright. Especially as part of the whole Amadeus parody, I guess I can give it a pass. The review was pretty hilarious

  5. I honestly would have been ok waiting a week after the recent tradgedy, but good to see Doug and co, still working hard to entertain us.

  6. Amadaus! I get it!

  7. We never had the cartoon in Germany so when this movie was on TV I just thought “What the hell is this crap?!”. Well, didn’t help that the movie was neither entertaining nor funny.

    • The Real Silverstar

The actual cartoon is much better. Trust me.

    • I found this movie funny, I liked the meta humor and thought Rocky and BullWinkle were funny, this introduced me to the show.

      • I was 12, maybe 13 years old when I saw this movie and had no idea that this was an adaption of a cartoon show. About the movie itself: Maybe it was too meta for my young brain, maybe the dub was bad; I don’t know, but what I can say is this: The movie left a negative and unfunny impression on me. So when I learned that there was actually a cartoon show I was not interested in it. Maybe I’ll give it a watch…

  8. Doug is reading my mind 😮 He knew I was going to open IMDB xD
    Well played critic, well played.

  9. Strange you brought up the George of the Jungle movie. The original cartoon was made by the same guy who made guy who made the original Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoon.

  10. I fondly remember watching Rocky & Bullwinkle cartoons every Sunday morning during Bozo the Clown. I also remember renting this movie at the video store 15 years ago. I watched it twice, and I forgot most of it afterwards.

I still like The Grinch, but I’d like to see you review Alice Through the Looking Glass some time in 2017.

If only the filmmakers found a way to Bob Hoskins this movie up. Also, Janeane Garofalo STILL looks like Lindsay Ellis.

I also find the CG versions of the title character as okay. Not spectacular, just okay. I can agree also that Rocky has become such a defeatist in this movie.

Why the fuck did I forget that John “one of the best things about 10 Cloverfield Lane” Goodman was in this movie? Seriously, the only celebrity cameo I recall after all these years was Whoopi “I used to be a big star, but now I co-host The View” Goldberg as a judge.

Nice job on the Taco Bell joke, and the part where you said Jason Alexander has a reverse Hitler stache.

Fearless Leader is more of a Trump guy than a Clinton guy. …Yeah, I have nothing to hide. I. Hate. Trump. …Putin sympathizing bastard.

Wait a minute. …A Nostalgia Critic episode that turns out being POSITIVE at the end and not that negative. …I DON’T KNOW WHAT’S REAL ANYMORE!!! (Jumps out the window)

  11. There. Will you people shut up about this now?

    • It’s kinda funny, while many others were impatient with this review, I actually liked the fact that he decided to do Tentacolino first. I really wanted to see him tare that a new one, especially after he said in a commentary that he’d never do it. I love it when he goes against that. On one hand, I should get after him for caving into the fans, but on the other hand, I’d be disappointed if he decided not to tackle it.

  12. I’m glad to see that you saw what I saw in this film. Whenever people call this movie terrible, I often get the impression they either don’t get it or completely forgot what the show was like. The bad puns from Bullwinkle… that was always part of his character. The self-referential humor was always a thing in the series. Also, it’s nice to see a positive review from you that’s actually positive and isn’t just you riffing on everything and then saying the film is good despite saying next to nothing positive about it.

  13. huh, that was surprisingly not what I expected. When I saw NC was going to review R&B, of course, first thing I did was check the IMDB page, and saw it had a very low grade. So I was prepared for a really funny review destroying an atrocious movie but….yea, NC is right, the movie was surprisingly better than what was criticised. The jokes worked, the actors were carbon-copies of their cartoon counterparts, the puns went from bad to good in a good balance, and even some cameos were good. I was specialy stunned at Kenan and Kel, I was like “WHAT THE HELL?”

And DeNiro was obviously having fun with his role. He IS that kind of actor that ends up in ridiculous characters so he tries to at least make a blast out of it. Be over-the-top, cartoonish and make people doubt his sanity, but…thats the point of acting, it can be enjoyable when the actor is free to go nuts. Its not a chore or a job, but a lifestyle. I can understand actors like Tim Curry and DeNiro giving their craziest acting for ridiculous roles, its the only way to make it less painful, or not painful at all to endure over the years. They would be ashamed of those movies if they didn’t manage to enjoy how bad were their scripts, which kinda throws their shame to the writer or director and leave them clean from all of it.

  14. How could you not mention that great running gag about them going through “that same town”? That was one of the best bits.

  15. Please do Chicken Little!

    • I’m actually curious as to whether or not he ever intends on doing an NC for films he expressed hatred toward in his Disneycember and Dreamworks-Uary reviews. I’d love to see him go into more depth on why Shark Tale fails so much or why Chicken Little is such a terrible film.

    • The Real Silverstar

Eh, I honestly don’t think Chicken Little warrants a full-blown review. It’s not even breathtakingly bad or entertainingly bad; it’s just a weak, ill-conceived movie. I was actually bored watching it.

  16. True story: This was the first movie I ever saw in a theater.

  17. The comparison to Amadeus was brilliant! This is like one of my favorites, right after Pearl Harbor (just because of the opening sequence), Alice in Wonderland, The Last Airbender.

  18. Blaze The Movie Fan

Nothing’s wrong with having an unpopular opinion.

  19. Wait I know the truth now! This movie was a faithful adaptation and it bombed, so Hollywood decided to re-imagine the rest of its adaptations leading to the terrible movies we have today. This is we should hate the movie!

  20. This was one of my favourite movies as a kid.
I actually remember seeing a comment requesting you to review this movie calling it a piece of trash, and I thought “WTF? I don’t think it was all that good, but it doesn’t deserve that sort of hate!” and I can’t believe other people hated it that much as well. I went into this review expecting to think “Yeah, maybe this movie isn’t as good as I thought it was back when I was a kid,” but you’ve proven to me it was as good as I remembered it.
Also, I’d never even heard of the Rocky and Bullwinkle Show until I read about this movie in a kids’ magazine. It’s thanks to this movie that I rented 2 VHSs of the show from a video store (VHS? Video store? Fuck, I’m old!) and really liked them.

One thing I think you should have acknowledged about the cameos in this movie was that Whoopi Goldberg’s character is literally called “Judge Cameo”.

  21. Hey, Hillary Clinton’s a much better candidate! You forgot the funniest joke. In the courtroom, Bullwinkle asks why the villains aren’t cartoon characters. I thought it was just okay. So did you! It’s definitely better than those other movies you mentioned.

  22. Loved the Amadeus parody XD

  23. Pastor Walter is my new favourite character

  24. ThatManWithTheHeadband12

When you said the cameos didn’t make sense, I thought you were going to go into WHY they didn’t make sense. Like Judge Cameo fangirling about Rocky and Bullwinkle in complete surprise when she’s supposed to know the identities in the case She’s presiding over before walking out

  25. “Tentacle hentai” was that line really in this movie?

    • Honore de Ballsack

      It should have been.
Also, apparently everyone forgot Rocky could only fly in the original cartoons when Bullwinkle threw him.
Also, why is piper wearing male drag?
And I NEVER liked Big Bang Theory or Janeane Garofalo.
John Goodman apparently has Michael Caine Syndrome. Very talented but will be in anything.
Biggest waste of Jonathan Winters since Mork.

  26. I’m honestly surprised by the relatively positive review, but I’m happy. I remember the show, and while it indeed wasn’t anything special…I did enjoy it. The same goes for this movie. It wasn’t anything special…but I liked it. It didn’t have to be amazing; it just needed to try and stay faithful to the source material, which it thankfully did. So, if you seriously hate on it, you’re hating it for the wrong reasons. If you hated the cartoon, and you hate the movie, that’s one thing. Otherwise, the movie really wasn’t that bad. Also…I hope you’re recovering from the pain you’ve experienced this month, Doug. Our prayers are still going to you, buddy.

  27. disembodiedvoiceofreason

Not my cup of tea but this movie doesn’t come off as horrible. Not in comparison to nearly every other adaptation. I legit laughed at some of the jokes, but why the hell was this the “good” adaptation?!

  28. Shit, when did Malcolm get so buff?

And that Jonathan Winters bit nearly had me pissing. Fantastic review

  29. I would like to say a happy belated 99th birthday to June Foray, the voice of Rocky and Natasha. Still alive, and working!
