  1. What’s tragic about Looney Tunes: Back in Action is that there were originally going to way more animated and action-packed scenes, but the Warner Brothers executives made them rewrite almost half the script and tone down on almost all the violence… AFTER most of the said scenes were half-animated. That’s right, they waited until late into production to make them cut and change huge chunks of the movie, so the writers and animators had to hastily cobble together more watered down scenes and jokes (mostly in live-action portions, since there wasn’t time to re-animate), leading to the “So Okay, It’s Average” final product we got.

Don’t get me wrong, Looney Tunes: Back in Action was never going to be a masterpiece (piggybacking off what you said, having the Looney Tunes in the real world would only work if they took it further and/or had a more creative story and characters like Who Framed Roger Rabbit), but I think it would have been more entertaining and memorable had they gone that route.

While you’re sick, go on to Youtube and look up “Looney Tunes: Back in Action Deleted Scenes” and you’ll see what I mean.

  2. Also: Take your time, Doug! Do what you need to do to feel better. You’ve given us all so much joy and entertainment over the years, so don’t feel rushed now.

  3. As a kid, I HATED Looney Toons but liked Looney Toons Babies and the Back in Action movie. Then, as a teen, I loved the Looney Toons show. Oh, and what do you have against the Charles Angels movie? -_- LOL. One last thing: I can’t wait for next week! ^.^

    • All I can figure is that Doug hates a whole lot of movies. He has really high standards even for fluff movies. The only thing they liked the same way as most people is Ninja Turtles. From then on, they were basically film critics, it seems.

Great for the series. Might not be so much fun if you want to go rent nostalgic movies.

  4. Looney Tunes back in action really did have potential, but it falls into a lot of the traps of it’s time similarly to that of Space Jam. The scene with the classic paintings was amazing, and so was the attack of the 50s B-Movie monsters (yes those were from real movies!) but I couldn’t care less about Jenna Elfman and especially Brendan Frasier’s characters or love interest.

The worst however, was Steve Martin’s cringe-worthy, unfunny, scenery chewing villain. So annoying.

  5. Feel better soon Doug. Don’t rush your recovery, and take care of yourself.

  6. I’ve been sick too. A virus is going around. Get well, Doug.

  7. Loki The Flame Shield

Honestly, I still have a soft spot for Space Jam

  8. Please get well Doug. That doesn’t sound good by the tone of your voice. Love you!

  9. Best thing about Space Jam? The theme song we all know lol.

  10. I had a VHS of Quack Busters as a kid, and while even as a kid, the voice thing was painfully obvious, i still very much liked it. I kinda wish i still had that video. I wonder if any of those older compilation movies have been released in modern formats.

Also, it’s funny to see Daffy shilling out Billy Beer, of all things.

  11. when he gets sick, doug turns into jason lee apparently

  12. Blaze The Movie Fan

I personally prefer the Donald Duck shorts over Looney Tunes, but that’s just me.

  13. Hope you feel better Doug.

  14. Feel better doug! that sounds like it sucks! I had a virus back a couple of years ago and it felt like forever until i felt like myself again. take care of urself!

  15. Sorry to hear that your sick Doug. I enjoy your editorials just as much as NC so I’m grateful that you managed to make it, but health should always come first.

Your Looney Tunes editorials and reviews are always fun since you’re obviously a big fan. I’m really curious to hear your thoughts on the Duck Dodger series.

  16. Honore de Ballsack

there was a lot of tension behind the scenes because Jenna Elfman kept trying to get Bugs to join the scientologists.

  17. Honore de Ballsack

    P.S. Get well soon, Doug!

  18. Devil's Advocate

also, the Looney Tunes Show version of Lola would not work in a new Space Jam movie, she’s have to be competent at sports and more serious, still.

  19. I will always see Brendan Fraiser as being a real life cartoon character. This will never change for me.

  20. Wait, you actually said good things about “Space Jam”?! Yeah, “Loonatics Unleashed” and “Baby Looney Tunes” really are worse! That’s the biggest guilty pleasure movie when TVTropes used to have a Troper Tales page for that. Yeah, glad you mentioned “Space Jam 2” and how it’ll probably suck. Wait, what was your favorite of those? Hey, did you know Alex Hirsch is working on a live-action pokemon movie?

  21. Get well soon Doug. Take care of yourself.

  22. I loved Space Jam when I was a kid, now don’t know, didn’t see since then

  23. Of all the pre-Space Jam movies, I actually owned the very first one: “The Bugs Bunny Road Runner Movie”! I didn’t know it was a theatrical film, nor did I know it was the first one.

Then I saw the one with Yosemite Sam’s boy at a hospital once. I thought it was just a long-running episode when I saw it (I mostly saw the last few minutes of it).

And it’s interesting to see NC soften up to “Space Jam” after all these years of despising it.

As for the thoughts on “Looney Tunes: Back in Action”… well, I liked it, but, yeah, I agree with his opinions as I kinda feel the same way. Why focus on the humans? The Looney Tunes are the stars of the show (as they should be because their name is in the title!). I still like it, just less than “Space Jam”, as, yes, they made the right decision in keeping them in the animated world.

  24. Yes Looney Tunes are awesome
Space Jam was great. Just cause she is sexualized douse not mean she cannot be tuff

  25. ‘Back in action’ as the last movie ?
He doesn’t know that there was a sequel to it ?

  26. That sucks that you’re sick. Get well soon, Doug!

  27. Hey, at least Space Jam invented a YouTube mash-up genre phenomena called Slam-Jam. 🙂
