In which we discuss the best way to scare and delight.

About AskLovecraft

In which celebrated and dead author HP Lovecraft offers his advice on such diverse topics as love, finance, cooking, and personal hygiene.

  1. I generally agree with this, although there are a few examples where practical effects and CGI have been used to great effect. John Carpenter’s “The Thing,” for example, still manages to terrify, and we see the monster multiple times throughout the film. On a more recent note, some of the stuff from Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy gave me nightmares, even though I knew they were fake.

Or do you want me to find the monster with the freaking eyeballs on its palms again?

  2. The first thing that comes to mind when I hear “terrible CGI monsters” is the werewolf/werewolves from Van Helsing.
