AT4W: Action Comics #1

The man of steel! The man of tomorrow! The man who will wreck your stuff!

About Linkara

Atop the Fourth Wall is a show about bad comic books. Linkara finds the surreal and the stupid and breaks them down page by page. You'll know why they're idiotic and how they can be improved.

  1. Apparently even my automatic spellchecker recognises the spelling of thru as T-H-R-U so it must be legit.

  2. The only death of a fictional character making national news that MORE nuts than the death of Superman is the death of Godzilla. Seriously, when Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (which did NOT get a dubbed american release until years later) came out in JAPAN, it made the news in AMERICA. That’s how big of deal the deaths of popular fictional characters can be.

  3. Also, another silly fact. The original, Action Comics No. 1 explanation of Superman’s strength, speed, and agility (that he was born on a planet with 15 times the gravity of Earth) not only makes more scientific sense than the modern sunlight-powered version, but also allows us to extrapolate the internal structure of the planet Krypton itself, and therefore have a rather specific reason why it eventually exploded.

Go read The Physics of Superheroes by Kakalios, it’s a great read with all sorts of interest ways how comics often get there physics WAY more right than you’d expect.

    • Aaaaannddd I did NOT expect to see the book I recommended make an appearance. Awesome.

    • Except that we know that one of the consequences of astronauts dealing with low/no gravity is loss of muscle mass and bone density. So while that baby would have been super, he’d be just a normal kid by the time he started kindergarten.

  4. The man who will get blamed for the destruction of half of Metropolis, even though he was trying to prevent it!
