  1. There are some varieties of beer that have a very low alcohol content, and are instead rich in electrolytes and carbohydrates. Basically they were the ancient equivalent of a sports drink, with just enough alcohol to kill the bacteria without rendering the drinker drunk or dehydrated, plus the carbs and electrolytes could be good for working people like pyramid builders, replenishing what they lose through sweat. I think that’s what they rationed 4 liters to each worker.
