  1. Creepy man with puppets? That’s Edgar Bergan with Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd! Bergan was a movie icon in the Golden Age, pioneer of television and comic books, and the inspiration for some guy named Jim Henson (the Muppet Movie is dedicated to Bergan). Even though Bergan died in the late 1970s (I was able to see him when I was a kid and he was amazing), Charlie and Mortimer are on permanent display in a little place called the Smithsonian. Some Nostalgia critic you are!

    • Actually, I think only Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd appear; I don’t think Edgar Bergan appears on screen (at least, not in the clip shown). The “creepy guy” I believe is another ventriloquist who was popular at the time named Señor Wences (the accent and “hand puppet” are awfully familiar) who, like Bergan, actually guest starred on The Muppet Show.
