About Yomarz

Hi I'm Yomarz! I really like video games! I also really like making videos about video games! So I decided to make a video channel to host my videos about video games. 1. Nightmare is the only way to play.

  2. Is that your mom at the beginning? If so, hi Mama Yomarz!

I picked up this game when it was release and LOVED every minute of it. It’s so much like the classic games touched up for modern day gaming. I’ve already unlocked all the classic levels and got most of the secrets. This is the reboot of Doom we needed.

    Thanks Bethesda!

Game looks fun and I’ll probably get it at some point soon but…NOOoooOoooo!

Why did they have to make a backstory and try to explain all the fantastical elements? Why does every movie and piece of fiction feel the need to do this now?

    – First off, the “Doomslayer” is a stupid name. That is fact. It sounds like something me and my buddies in Jr. High would have come up with…no scratch that, my thirteen year olds circle of friends were more sophisticated then to name a character something so lame.

    – Why does he have to be some prophesied “chosen one” with some deeper meaning and foretold destiny? What made the first game so great was that it was you as a space marine alone, outnumbered, and out of your league trying to escape the corridors of Hell.

Seriously though, why do game developers have to bog down franchises with some of the worst writing since 1950s drive-in era horror and sci-fi mixed with crappy direct to video 80s and 90s post apocalypse action movies?

Cool video, but I had to get out that rant…F***ing “Doomslayer”? – SMH

    • “Why did they have to make a backstory and try to explain all the fantastical elements?”

It always have but developers didn’t care.. I think that story was deliberately hammy and I like it.

      So you get the joke..

“– Why does he have to be some prophesied “chosen one” with some deeper meaning and foretold destiny? What made the first game so great was that it was you as a space marine alone, outnumbered, and out of your league trying to escape the corridors of Hell.”

Yup, definitely not chosen one as every other marine could do that.. and obviously not forget about sacrifice of doom marine pet bunny and fact that John Romero is final boss himself.

That is what we call “understanding the point” and “being faithful to original”.

Totally being serious here: Have you played the game?

If you have, please answer honestly:

Is this all played as a joke? If the whole back story and “prophesized chosen one” thing is all done completely tongue-in-cheek for laughs? if so, then I can certainly give it a pass.

It’s just that I’ve seen way too many games like this take their low end B-movie writing way too seriously. I’m encouraged by the gameplay and faithful elements of the original doom games, but I have to cringe at the name “Doomslayer” because it might go beyond “so bad it’s good” and into just being so bad it’s terrible.

Finally: No, the “chosen one” schtick is played out in my opinion. I’m tired of heroes being pre-destined for greatness. Why can’t a common man ever rise up to greatness anymore? Must everyone be Luke Skywalker or Harry Potter now?

        • It’s not played as a joke, however it is self aware. The game realizes that the whole “Hell demons invade Mars” concept is inherently silly, so they just go balls to the wall and ham it up. It’s not making fun because that would be hypocritical and offensive to the fans.

But regardless, if you don’t like the backstory you can just ignore it and play it how you want. You being a mystical chosen one has no bearing on the gameplay and you don’t get magic powers. You’re just an angry, badass dude who doesn’t like demons. I didn’t get invested in the doom guy’s origin at all.

            Glad to hear it.

While I think sometimes producers of media like to hide behind being “self aware” as a shield from criticism, I can tolerate it if it’s schlock done for the sake of schlock… I guess.

Glad the gameplay takes precedence over trying to make a coherent narrative out of: Kill an army of evil demons with high powered weaponry. I mean, if people can’t get on board for that, what hope do we have as gamers?

          • Quoting John Carmack “Story in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It’s expected to be there, but it’s not that important.” It is quite old quote, but it show they original philosophy behind DooM plot.

  4. Sorry Yomaz but Doom 3 wasn’t true DooM. From when DooM was a horror like Doom 3 was? We wait twenty years for new game not twelve.. and recent DooM game (aka DooM4) is what we wait for so long 😀

  5. Yeah I’m going to have to disagree about gameplay always trumping story, different kinds of games can make a greater narrative focus work as long as the gameplay isn’t actively terrible.

Honestly I don’t see why this has to be a zero-sum game here, we can have different types of things that are good in their own ways. Not exactly revolutionary to point out. Heck sometimes we can even have games that manage both.

    • I would say that what Yomarz said is mostly a truth.. I know exceptions like Xenogears what have terrible gameplay byt so awesome story that it is still is one of my favorite games. But most games have typically just decent story and that is typically not enough when gameplay is bad.

  6. Dude, dude, is your mom single. She’s kind of a hotty.

  7. Why does everyone keep saying it’s the same Doomguy? The new one has a backstory where he’s an ancient knight from another dimension.

Also they did integrate powerups into the lore, the Codex says they’re various kinds of possessor spirits that only the Doomguy can survive using.

  8. hmm, I was afraid the new DOOM would be like any generic FPS, but seeing your video it reminds me of an extremely hardcore version of Metroid Prime, that is pretty freaking awesome actually.
