So, I want to watch anime in order to fit in with my autistic peers. I don't exactly relax enough and let my brain rest. So, I wanted to ask if anyone felt they could point me towards some good anime to start off with becoming anime literate, so to speak.

What's your recommended anime for beginners?

Cowboy Bebop is one of the best gateway anime, but many others depend on what genres you like. Could you list a few?

I loved Death Note. Any other really dark anime with sad endings and shit but with action and suspense? I also like comedy. I'm looking closer to shonin than shojin. I really like dark action, dark sci-fi, dark fantasy. I also want to see the basics and become anime literate. Horror would be awesome to see more of an really dark stories.

I saw the beginning of Fate and kind of liked it but got burnt out on it kind of quickly. I saw the beginning of Deadman wonderland and never finished it, but wanted to. It's just that it was a long time ago and I didn't spend much time watching TV back then. I liked Deadman and I finished Death Note like I mentioned above and fucking loved it. Lol, it was so damn dark but totally epic.

    Dark anime
    Berserk (the original tv series)
    Black Lagoon
    Claymore
Ghost in the Shell (more gritty and dirty than dark)
    Hellsing Ultimate
    Jin-Roh
    Ninja Scroll
Mobile Suit Gundam: War in the Pocket
    Psycho Pass
    Tokyo Ghoul
    Watamote

Basics (there are many many others but I'm leaning towards more western style settings, ease to adjust and generally shorter shows)
    Any Miyazaki directed movie
    Akira
Bubblegum Crisis ovas (epitome of Blade Runner's impact on anime)
    Cowboy Bebop
    Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Outlaw Star (think Firefly but Joss Whedon ripped off this show)
    Trigun
    One Punch Man
    Perfect Blue
    FLCL
    Macross Plus

Yes, there's plenty of others and ones that I might have missed.

My most favorite anime of all time is "Paranoia Agent." It is very dark and suspenseful. There is not a lot of action by the standard definition, but I can guarantee you'll be mentally involved with each episode.

If you enjoy "Paranoia Agent," I would also recommend "Serial Experiments: Lain." It is certainly the lesser of the two, but definitely worth a watch. It's sort of old by now, so I'm sure it'd also be interesting to watch just for all the old tech references, too.

FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST (2003) and then FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST:BROTHERHOOD (2009) at least try the original and then Brotherhood. ERASED is also a good recent anime. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is a great one too! [IMG]
