  1. Action Channel bled into October this year, but that's fine, because I'm taking a week or two off to work on the Halloween episode!

Patlabor 3 is a strange beast. It's barely a Patlabor movie, it's barely a mecha movie, it's barely an adaptation of its source material, and it's... well, it's kind of all over the place. It's a kaiju horror film, it's a hardboiled detective noir, it's a thriller, it's a buddy cop film, a tragedy, etc. I'm surprised that Wasted 13 didn't end up being an interdimensional alien. But all in all, still compelling enough to rewatch without trouble.

I just wished Unit 2 was in it a little more. But you can kind of even say that about Patlabor 2, and that's my favorite Patlabor feature.

  2. Let's take a look at New Dominion Tank Police!

I know this is a short video, but most of what I can say about this in terms of themes and such I basically already said when I reviewed the original OVA. Here I concentrated on some of the newer things happening to our favorite ragtag tank maniacs. Well, they do seem a tad less impulsive, but there's plenty of collateral damage, nevertheless. But what I've done here is just a basic overview type of review without bells and whistles.

Honestly, I'm not getting enough feedback to keep doing the bookend material in every video.

  3. The Encore Action Channel provided me with a lot of anime to chew on in the early aughts, just when my anime fandom was kicking in highest gear, but they weren't all Macross Plus and Metropolis. Some of them were just Vandread, a show that's... well, somewhat memorable, at least, if just for the premise alone.

A crew of lady space pirates and three unlucky (or very lucky, depending on your perspective) men are thrust together in a desperate clash for survival against an alien threat. The problem is, in this far flung future, men and women live on separate planets, so part of survival includes enduring the culture shock! Vandread combines harem-ish antics, mecha action, and gender politics, but is it more than the sum of its parts? Well... eh...

  4. Sometimes anime titles slip through the cracks of my fandom, even titles that are fairly well known and appreciated. Back in the day, Key the Metal Idol was one of those titles that I'd always heard of and read about, but I never got around to actually watching it. Since it's part of the zeitgeist of my formative years as an anime fan, I thought I'd watch to review here.

Teen girl Tokiko Mima is a peculiar sort. She's quiet, withdrawn, and somewhat naive. Oh, also, she's a robot created in a rural laboratory of her now-deceased "grandfather". When she's left his final wishes- for her to become human by making 30,000 friends- she moves to Tokyo to make it big. The only problem is, she doesn't have any actual talents. Well, none that would make it big on the stage, unless you count her array of esp-based abilities. But is "Key", as she's called, less than human, or more than human? It'll take a pop idol, a harsh taskmaster coordinator, a fanboy, a robot fetishist businessman, his indestructible right hand man, and a passive-aggressive best friend to bring out the song in this synthiod!

Oh, also, Pen Pen found another new student. Probably by using a white panel van.

  5. It's the big 1-0-0 here on Otaku Evolution, and I wanted to celebrate by reviewing one of my favorite anime movies... that's been talked about to death by everyone else already! What better way to celebrate than by reviewing Hayao Miyazaki's first feature length film? It's the classic Lupin The Third movie, Castle of Cagliostro! Don't be too concerned, though, I'm certain there's some insight in my observations and reactions, and if not, you can at least be entertained by the bookend material! I spent a couple of weeks on that, so give it a shot.

Here's to 100 more! (Hopefully people will actually contribute to my Patreon before that.)

  6. It's time to finish the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure OVAs with the one made before the first part of the story! Y-yeah, that's a thing. 1993's OVA picks up where 2000's left off, so I guess they wanted to get to the more interesting portion of the story first when they made this. I dunno, folks, I'd say the giant orangutan whose Stand power was a whole ship and the guy who hopped into reflections was pretty damn interesting already. But this part has Dargy... I mean, Dooley. No, that isn't it. What's his name again? Doggie? Well, it does have A doggie, at least.

  7. You know, two weeks later, I cannot even remember the why's and how's of the opening sequence I made with the casino. You'd think I'd be building up to some big thing for my 100th episode, but believe me when I say, I have no damn idea what I'm doing for that one. Even so, Darker than Black is a pretty good show, and I enjoyed rewatching it for the same reason I enjoy rewatching stuff like Deadman Wonderland and Tokyo ESP: dumb fun with super powers. It's not some sweeping epic like FMA where the specialty ability folks get some big character arcs and there's a carefully crafted vision, but it's a pleasure to watch nevertheless, even if it isn't as enriching.

  8. Well, summer's finally here, but before I switch openings and consider taking some time off (not that you'd notice), it's about time for a Mid Year English Dub Review, wherein I evaluate the English versions of the anime I've covered thus far in 2017. Featuring the dubs of:

    - Birth
    - Tank Police
    - The Gokusen
    - Tokyo Vice - The Tokyo
    - Gungrave
    - Babel II (OVA)
    - Captain Herlock (Harlock) Endless Odyssey
    - Tenchi Muyo OVA 2
    - Mobile Suit Gundam Movie III
    - Lupin III: Pursuit of Harimao's Treasure
    - Black Jack OVA (Eps 1-2)
    - Golgo 13: Queen Bee
    - Ninja Nonsense
    - Michiko and Hatchin

There's also some of my usual messing around with the sprites in an ever-building and unnecessary continuity in my videos! But come on, some of it's pretty neat. The five of you watching must be thrilled.

  9. Sorry this is so late! I wanted this on YouTube, but it got flagged, and the flag is still there days after disputing it (it's Fair Use, FFS) so I had to upload it to my new VidMe account. Not being able to monetize this video is irritating after all the work I put into it.

    But anyway...

Michiko & Hatchin is the story of an escaped convict, a put upon orphan, a corrupt cop with a crush, a violent psychopath, a deranged turncoat, and a missing lover and father. The chase is on in the fictional country of Diamandra (which is totally not Brazil), with Michiko determined to find Hiroshi, dragging his daughter Hana (Hatchin) along, and dogged Atsuko on their tail. Can they dodge the Monstro Preto gang and reach their goal? Not without a lot of (mis)adventures!

  10. Anime comedies are a strange beast. Not only can they be completely outside of Western cultural context, but oftentimes they're heavily rewritten by the dub studio the licensor employs for NA release. So, that in mind, how does an anime like Ninja Nonsense, which is fairly faithfully dubbed hold up in the humor department? I'll take a look at it in this video. Also, I guess there's some kind of flashback and an extra bit at the end. If Pen Pen is holding the camera, how is all that extra footage getting recorded? Hm.

  11. We come to the end of Dezaki Month in this episode with a review of Golgo 13: Queen Bee, Dezaki's second (and final) Golgo feature. From the greatest thief, to the greatest doctor, to the greatest assassin, we've sure had a journey, huh? Here we see the silent silencer take on a group of guerillas, a band of mercenaries, and corrupt politicians. Oh, and for some reason, everybody's banging in this. Expect to see Censor Penguin.

  12. Dezaki Month continues with the first two episodes of an anime OVA that pits Tezuka's mysterious black-garbed unlicensed surgeon against a strange disease that dessicates and the latest drug epidemic: wacky cacty (cacti)! All the while he exposes a young girl made out of a teratoma to the gruesome disfigurements of his patients or keeps her trapped in a cabin. Huh, that really paints this as a different kind of anime, doesn't it? Black Jack isn't some creep, but that doesn't stop a wide range of ladies from throwing themselves at him. And he gives them the D... octoring.

  13. It's the beginning of Dezaki Month here on Otaku Evolution! What happens when you pit the world's greatest thieves against the world's greatest (retired) secret agent and throw in some Neo-Nazi scum? You have canal chases, slide puzzle-traps, grabby tourist children, train and helicopter fights, jet packs, submarines, and dipictions of queerness of both the subtle and problematic! It's Dezaki's last Lupin effort, but is it any good? Find out in this episode of OE!

  14. Live (taped) from a secluded Antarctic base's officer's club, it's my review of the final movie in the original Mobile Suit Gundam movie trilogy! Featuring state-of-the-art animation techniques (lol) and all-star cast of nobodies! I talk a bit about Newtypes, call out Sayla Mass for her lack of awareness, show a mess of clips from the Gundam franchise, all of which I had to shorten frustratingly, and actually utilize more than two sound effects! So strap into your mobile suits and step onto the launch platform, it's time to finish off the One Year War!

  15. Anime's favorite harem returns in six more episodes of Tenchi Muyo!, an OVA increasingly about one character (Washu), and also increasingly not about Tenchi whatsoever. There truly is no need for Tenchi when you've got the Greatest Scientific Genius in the Universe, a cute little bundle of trouble house guest, a hive mind creature, a robot clone, a octopus-bearded jerk, and a whole lot of inbred royalty! Oh, and I guess the boy in question occasionally does something.
