Gamera vs Viras – Brandon Tenold

It’s part 4 of the Gamera-A-Thon with “Gamera vs. Viras” (1968), where Gamera battles an alien squid monster, gratuitous stock footage and 2 Kenny’s!

Cool video and I unfortunately have watched your other 3 gamers videos so I know what footage is from the other movies and which ones they used it from(so that sucked but loved that you were being lazy just like the film makers. I still though am waiting for that part where gamera spins on that tightrope(aka the scene from mst3k which if you haven’t donated to it yet go donate to brining it back it’ll be awesome!!!

  2. There’s nothing like watching a guy in a rubber suit destroy models.

  3. Even more frustrating, is that at least a few of the Kenny’s have older siblings who are somehow not willing to slap the hell out of them.

  4. Ah. Gamera. My favorite Japanese protagonist that is almost entirely composed of turtle meat (that shell doesn’t count).

  5. Two Kenny’s in one kaiju movie!?! Isn’t that a sign of the coming of the end of days?

  6. 2:55 – But here’s a better question: at what point did the alien atom learn Gamera’s name? Did Gamera slip him a business card during the battle, because I sure didn’t hear him say it out loud.

  7. Hmmm, that gets my imagination going. If American producers can comeback from the mess that was ‘Godzilla’ 1998 I wonder what they could do with Gamera.

  8. Let’s go Gamera.

    Gamera…Gamera..

Gamera is really neat, Gamera is filled with meat, we been eating Gamera

Shell, Teeth, Eyes, Claws, Breath, Scales, Fun.

  9. Just curious, when you’re done with these, will you be reviewing the ones that were actually pretty well made? Not well written, just well made.

    • That’s a good question. The only Gamera movie I’ve ever actually seen was ‘Gamera: Guardian of the Universe’ (1995). I had so little exposure to any kaiju aside from Godzilla that when I saw Siskel and Ebert review the movie back in the 90’s I thought Gamera was a new creation. I rented it and it was an “alright” movie. Nowhere near the tragedy of the older stuff but reasonably standard when it comes to kaiju films. As further proof of my lack of exposure to the genre it wouldn’t actually be until Brandon started reviewing Gamera movies that I learned just how long Gamera had been around, or all the other Godzilla ripoffs and knockoffs.
So, thanks Brandon for the education on kaiju properties. 🙂

  10. It’s great to see a review of the only Gamera movie not shown on “Mystery Science Theater 3000”. It’s easy to see why. They just use the same footage! They’d have to redo of all their jokes. I’ve seen all the other ones on MST3K. I’m glad to be introduced to you as you are quite funny.
