  1. I’ve always heard about Ghost in the Shell but I’ve never heard about the plot or anything. Even in the heights my anime days, it always slipped under my radar.

Ghost in the Shell is one of those early Anime classics, I’ll grant. And there is a lot of thematic material about technology, identity, and spirituality in a digital age. But honestly, it never was my favorite.

If I was to try to explain why, I’m not sure. I think that, back then, my tastes just weren’t quite refined enough to appreciate it on a deeper level.

    • You too harsh on yourself.. as far I love that movie it is bit simplistic in comparison to manga and TV series. It is also artsy and many things are more for a look then with the purpose. And lets be honest it barely avoid being pretentious. It is great movie, but not masterpiece or even best part of franchise.

Like it’s trying a bit too hard to be artsy, rather than just letting the themes come through in the storytelling. You certainly have to be in the mood for something a bit more contemplative to watch it, that’s for sure, and I think that back then, I would have preferred something a bit less introspective and a bit more actiony.

Not that there’s anything wrong with introspection. But at the end of the day, it has to tell a compelling story, and I feel it just doesn’t quite hit it out of the park there.
