  1. It is a crazy movie, but that’s why it’s a classic! I normally don’t like that many horror films so therefore this one was one of the very few horror flicks I really enjoy.

  2. Random fact: In Chinese, “Mogway” means “demon.” (Mandarin mogui 魔鬼).

  3. They actually did make Gizmo Furby toys for a while that could talk and move and all that jazz. I remember seeing the ads on TV and the dolls in the stores as a kid (EDIT: Yep, here’s a link: http://gremlins.wikia.com/wiki/Gizmo_Furby) Though I think what little I saw of this movie inspired my fear in the Furby toys to begin with. Those little shits were creepy with the way that they would turn on randomly and start talking in their nasally bird voices. But yeah, I’ve never actually seen Gremlins in its entirety because it’s way too disturbing for me. My mom and grandparents loved this movie and tried numerous times to get me to watch it while I was growing up (“Oh, come on! It’s funny! They smoke and drink and mess with old ladies! You’ll love it!” Their exact words.). However, I found the actual Gremlins themselves (both Gizmo and the other more beastly ones) to be way too scary looking, and after getting a glimpse of the microwave scene once on TV, realized it was a tad too gory for me as well.My grandparents had to hide their copy of the movie whenever I visited the house because the cover with Gizmo and the creepy evil Gremlin shadow terrified me. The only other scene I’ve really ever seen from this is the infamous “And that’s how I found out Santa wasn’t real” monologue, which I’ll admit is darkly humorous but freaking depressing at the same time. In conclusion, I can respect the impact this film had on the medium, but it’s not my cup of tea.

  4. Snorgatch Pandalume

Never liked this movie, never found it funny or scary. Like a lot of Joe Dante’s work, it feels completely artificial, like it doesn’t take place in any sort of real world. The entire town looks like a sound stage, and none of the characters are believable. In a movie with fantastic elements, the real-world elements have to be realistic, or it becomes impossible to suspend your disbelief. Everything in Gremlins feels phony, so it doesn’t work, at least not for me. It doesn’t help that it has Keye Luke playing a stereotypical “wise old Asian.”

  5. Fun fact…this movie is in Hill Valley. Kingston Falls’ main city square set is the same one used in “Back to the Future”.

    • Yeah, they used the same real world locations, but very different in universe. Isn’t Back to the Future set in sunny California, and Gremlins somewhere it snows?

  6. Agree with Tamara early in her review it’s over-rated and was more a product of the times. Later she seems to get into the spirit and has more fun with it.

Is it a kids movie? A dark comedy? A campy tribute to popcorn horror movies that were never really like this until the 80s?…It’s all over the place. The tone shifts and some of the more mean-spiritedness and callous treatment of injury make it not a great movie for kids, even though it was marketed to kids.

Gremlins 2 is just a cash in sequel with a ton of gags, cameos, fourth wall breaking, and not much plot or depth.

    • “Gremlins 2 is just a cash in sequel with a ton of gags, cameos, fourth wall breaking, and not much plot or depth.”
      – Could be why so many people like it. 😀 I definitely like 2 more than the first one.

      Great review, Tamara.
You know, ‘Gremlins 2’ isn’t set during any particular season so you can review it anytime you like.
And now that you’ve brought it up, I’m beginning to wonder why no one has thought about rebooting this property. I guess it’s because the originals are so good no one wants the job of trying to improve upon them. It’s probably for the best.

      • “You know, ‘Gremlins 2’ isn’t set during any particular season so you can review it anytime you like.”

That’s basically what I came here to say. 🙂

“I guess it’s because the originals are so good no one wants the job of trying to improve upon them.”

If only it were so… but have you seen Hollywood?

        • I have. They’ve rebooted stuff a lot newer than Gremlins, failed at it and still made a profit. So I’d say that either Hollywood has largely forgotten about it or they simply haven’t seen enough potential value in it to try for a reboot.
Either way, it’s for the best.

  7. Yep. Another Tamara’s Never Seen… that I’ve never seen. Also, when Ike made a sound I thought a skit was starting where a Gremlin attacks you. LOL

  8. This is such a unique and awesome film with phenomenal visual effects that still hold up to this day. Although I must admit, Kate’s story about how her dad died completely traumatized me when I saw it as a kid.

  9. Yeah definitely check out Gremlins 2. It’s even got twin brothers from T2 you might recognize.

  10. They just don’t make kids movies as good as Gremlins anymore.

  11. My brother and sister and I used to watch the Gremlins movies all the time when we were kids. Good times.

  12. The Movie Explorer

People are telling you the second one was better? I thought it was a mess and a waste of time. Watch it if you want, but the first is the good one.

  13. I’ve never watched this series, and I have a question… There is any movie that Tamara HAS seen before getting this job?
