Our Response

Since the posting of the “Not So Awesome” document on Monday, April 2, 2018, we have been exploring all of our options of how to address the lies that have been alleged by multiple disgruntled individuals with vindictive intentions.

Channel Awesome has always tried to keep our dealings with our content partners out of the public eye and despite any differences or disagreements we have never publicly spoken negatively about any of them, but a response to the accusations leveled against us must happen.

Obviously, we cannot address all 73 plus pages of accusations against us in this forum, but we will address the most egregious now.

ACCUSATION – Jane Doe accuses us of knowing about a “sexual deviant” for over a year (Page 66).

FACT – The screen shot below clearly demonstrates the time elapsed from being made aware of the individual in question (name redacted for legal reasons) and the time the content partner was released from Channel Awesome – 3 weeks, not over a year. During the 3 week period, we consulted a lawyer and waited to see if anyone would come directly to us, as our only knowledge of this was second hand.

It is obvious the person who came forward with this in the Not So Awesome document wants their name protected, so we will continue to do so.

ACCUSATION – Sean Fausz accuses former Channel Awesome COO and founder, Michael Ellis, of a conversation of sexual nature that lasted over two hours (Page 49 & 50.)

FACT – Michael Ellis resigned from the company and no contact from Michael Ellis was attempted after the conversation was reported to Michael Michaud. With any termination involving a founder and shareholder, legal separation must happen and this takes time.

ACCUSATION – Multiple content partners state payment for their contributions to the site were not compensated.

FACT – From the beginning of the site, anyone that has been added as a content partner was informed that ChannelAwesome.com was an aggregator for their content. At no time did Channel Awesome take a cut of their videos, as the practice is with Multi Channel Networks (MCNs). We never wanted to be an MCN and only asked them to schedule their videos that they already were doing for Blip.tv and YouTube.
We gave them access to over 30 million page views and over a million unique viewers a month at our height. Channel Awesome viewed the partnership as a way to help content partners grow their audience while bringing in new content and increasing the community within the site.

Further benefiting content partners, Channel Awesome covered all costs associated with server, hosting and labor costs associated with maintenance and updates. Some content partners even had their servers for their own sites paid for by Channel Awesome. None of these costs were ever passed along to our content partners.

ACCUSATION – The document talks about the drop in traffic to the site.

FACT – While we did have an initial drop after the switch to Demo Reel, the real hit to the site’s traffic came from our growing presence on YouTube. When we relaunched the Nostalgia Critic show in January of 2013, Blip.tv decided to start placing the full episode up on the LeagueofSuperCritics channel a week after we launched it on Thatguywiththeglasses.com.

As we grew on LeagueofSuperCritics more and more viewers decided to watch it on YouTube instead of our site. The biggest blow to site traffic came before the downfall of Blip.tv. While we won’t go into full details, we were forced to abandon the LeagueofSuperCritics channel and instantly start achannelthatsawesome in May, 2015. This is the point when traffic began to quickly drop off our site (now Channelawesome.com). One of the biggest accusers stated that they might still be on the site if the views were there. As stated by Kaylyn below:

ACCUSATION – Multiple content partners have alleged our Anniversary Specials were not compensated for time worked and crossover videos were asked to be turned over, if filmed, to Channel Awesome.

FACT – When invitations for the Anniversary Specials were issued, we made it clear to all content partners that their participation was on a voluntary basis. In addition, content partners were always given the option of declining our invitation with no questions asked and no repercussions. We understood we were asking our content partners to give up their time and that not everyone could do that.

The Producer Contract for Channel Awesome 3rd Anniversary Film Participation also outlined the following terms and conditions for those who did agree to participate, including:
• Participation was voluntary
• Crossovers were never required

Everyone who attended the anniversary was told that Channel Awesome would cover the cost of travel, lodging, breakfast, lunch, and dinner if the filming went late.

ACCUSATION – A few content partners alleged a misogynistic work atmosphere by Channel Awesome.

FACT – Channel Awesome’s current and former female staff, including Tamara Chambers, Rachel Tietz, Aiyanna Wade, and Heather Reusz, have had vastly different experiences than the ones described. We are always trying to improve ourselves both personally and professionally and moving forward we will implement mandatory sensitivity training for all staff to ensure we maintain a culture of respect for all employees.

ACCUSATION – Holly Brown makes numerous accusations throughout the document.

FACT – Holly Brown is a former employee and shareholder who was allowed to resign. Unfortunately her accusations are not true and are vindictive in nature.

ACCUSATION – Holly Brown alleges CEO Michael Michaud, is sole owner of the Nostalgia Critic IP.

FACT – The IP is owned by Channel Awesome, Inc. The partnership is owned by four individuals with a 5th person joining ownership by the end of the year.

ACCUSATION – Holly Brown alleges Channel Awesome had her work during “To Boldly Flee” after her surgery.

FACT – During this time, Robert Walker, Doug Walker and Michael Michaud told her she did not have to work. Site updates were performed by others as she recovered.

ACCUSATION – Lindsay Ellis alleges Doug Walker and Channel Awesome ignored concerns regarding the “transformation scene.”

FACT – As the screen shot below shows, Lindsay was repeatedly asked for her opinion and approval of the scene before it was finalized. Lindsay even helped Doug make the scene sound ‘better.’

ACCUSATION – Lindsay Ellis alleges Channel Awesome did not do enough to protect female content partners from abusive commenters.

FACT – Channel Awesome has a strict policy regarding our community including IP banning all abusive posters, as well as banning their account via username and email and continuing to monitor our forums. We worked with Lindsay directly to help her address issues resulting from an abusive commenter.

ACCUSATION – Allison Pregler states “not a single person wasn’t miserable.”

FACT In this video, you’ll find that Allison says that it “was a great production to be a part of. It was a lot of fun to be a part of this and Suburban Knights.”

ACCUSATION – Multiple content partners addressed the lack of communication.

FACT – We agree communication could have and should have been better. We got into this business based on our passion for content creation and have had many growing pains over the years. We always strive to learn from our mistakes and strengthen our skills.
Have we made mistakes? Yes, we have. We even discuss some of our challenges in our behind the scenes videos. We’ve always focused on trying to entertain our viewers, shine spotlights on unknown talent and share our attention with various charities – and we hope to continue to do so moving forward.

About Channel Awesome

  1. “Obviously, we cannot address all 73 plus pages of accusations against us in this forum, but we will address the most egregious now.”

So instead you just barely scratch the surface. Why can’t you address them all? People took the time out to read all the accusations. They’ll take the time out to read your responses. Although I’m not sure how much they’ll believe said responses when Holly has already come forward with her own screenshots that contradict your claims that she resigned. Not even 24 hours after posting this and your already flimsy arguments are starting to fall apart.

    • Abuse, terminating employees on flimsy pretenses, inconsistently punishing producers and making up rules on the fly, nah man, that’s not egregious at all, let us instead respond by shouting “NUH UH” at the women involved while simultaneously not denying that the guy who was sexually harrassed was in fact sexually harrassed and including without refuting that their response was “[we] told him he couldn’t be doing that” implying that 1. it had happened before and 2. they already knew about it, but hey, its okay, because they only took three weeks to fire him instead of a year.

  2. ???????? bravo Mike Michaud. You finally came to your senses and decided to make a long ass legitimate NON-apology response this time for all the chaos you have caused this site better than that half-ass note you left on Facebook. Congratulations. Now where’s the REAL apology response? Don’t worry I got all the time in the world ⌚️…….

  3. NostalgiaHeadass

Just like anyone on this terrible site i also made an accoung to comment.
Ive literally been following NC for years. Noni never watched any of those cringe 3 hour movies. I started to notice a downfall recently in you sad sad content. The characters you create were never funny. Never good. The skits served one purpose: to be skipped over to watch the review and that was about it.
This is NOT an apology and it seems your heads are so up your butts you cant see right. Just like your terrible Sibling Rivaly show this is something i wanted to see end. Couldnt even offer your coworkers water or food, couldnt even work woth your people. This is a shame how much you are spiraling though i did see it coming. This is not an apology, this is a “IM BETTER THAN YOU” statement. You just had to prove a point and guess what your channel is sinking below you. You talk about donating though you couldnt even give to the people HELPING AND WORKING WITH YOU. Couldnt even put out a video either had to put it on this ugly as sin website. Learn some human decancy dude, no one is happy with you and learn to say sorry. This will never be an apology. This is repulsive behavior. Grow up someday.

    • NostalgiaHeadass

I like how you all make fun of Trump yet you are literally acting the same way he does like a group of immature adults.

      • NostalgiaHeadass

  4. You could have said this:

“While we refute certain claims presented in the document, we acknowledge that our previous actions may have left a sour note with some of our former producers. For that, we apologize. We understand their frustration due to our shortcomings at the time, and we wish to extend an open round table to get everything on the table.”

    Instead, we got:

“A bunch of vindictive people with axes to grind are lying and smearing our name. Here are 20 lines of a screenshot proving we did everything right in a 3 hour long conversation.”

    Really, who greenlit this response?

  5. Appreciate the response, definitely could’ve been better handled, but admitting you have a problem is the first step to addressing this. If anything this response shows that the situation isn’t nearly as black and white as some people made it sound. Definitely still going to watch NC every week.

  6. Yeah, sorry, you claim that the accusations are all lies, but there’s so many that say the same things, they can’t ALL be lying. I’m sorry, but you guys need to suck it up and apologize and admit you’ve done wrong.

Oh well, all my favorites have left CA anyway and since Doug just does boring reviews of new movies, not old ones, there’s no reason to watch him anymore. (I mean, come on, he’s the NOSTALGIA CRITIC! No one cares about live action Disney remakes, now if he was reviewing OLD live action Disney like Condorman or The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes that’ll be different. And he could do things like a Vincent Price Month or a Boris Karloff Month. But no, we get lame modern movies. Who cares? Reviews for those are a dime a dozen. Review the the 1976 Bad News Bears instead.)

Face it, guys, you’ve killed your own channel. Bye.

  7. The Crazed Spruce

Wow. When most businessmen are faced with a P.R. nightmare like this, they issue a formal statement apologizing to the people they’ve wronged, accept responsibility, and pledge to do better moving forward. But not you guys. Oh, sweet Jesus, not YOU guys….

This pathetic excuse for a statement just killed the last lingering thread of respect I had for this site. No, wait, that’s not true. The “we regret you feel that way” statement did that. This one poured salt on that thread’s grave, then set it on fire and pissed on the flames.

I like Malcolm and Tamara, respect them as actors, and sincerely hope them both well going forward. And I’ll still follow Brad and E-Rog… on YouTube. But I can no longer support a site that treats its contributors, past and present, this horribly.

    • The Crazed Spruce

I apologize to E-Rod for misspelling his name. I regret any offense I may have caused, and sincerely hope to spell creators’ names properly in the future.

(See how easy it is, Michaud?)

    • The_Madder_Hatter

Replace most businessmen with smart businessmen

  8. “ACCUSATION – Holly Brown makes numerous accusations throughout the document.

FACT – Holly Brown is a former employee and shareholder who was allowed to resign. Unfortunately her accusations are not true and are vindictive in nature.”

I don’t know. That seems incredibly vague, and even a bit dodgy.

  9. I supported Channel Awesome until I read this abysmal response.

    • I feel you bro. I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, until all those doubts were crushed like so many walnuts under an invisible steamroller.

  10. “ACCUSATION – A few content partners alleged a misogynistic work atmosphere by Channel Awesome.

FACT – Channel Awesome’s current and former female staff, including Tamara Chambers, Rachel Tietz, Aiyanna Wade, and Heather Reusz, have had vastly different experiences than the ones described.”

This also seems really dodgy, as to only mentioning a few specific people who may have had different experiences

    • Not to mention the entire “former staff” part is complete bullshit considering those accusations come from many of their former staff members.

  11. I’m not a CA fan, nor have I been since around 2011. However, I think you handled this the only way you could have. You’ve proven that things in the document were fabricated and/or exaggerated, and rightfully didn’t address the overwhelming number of petty issues in that document.
That said, you guys did a real piss poor job redacting Justin’s name as the sexual deviant. Not to mention that it was quite easy to match up the date mentioned in that chatlog with the day JewWario left.

  12. I did not think there was any worse response to a controversy than “we’re sorry you feel that way”. But Mike and the admins just out-trumped the cheeto fuhrer in asanine twitter rants.

Here’s how you dig your collective cash-grabbing asses out of the fire:

“We’re sorry. Channel Awesome started as a community where creators could upload videos in a safe place away from Youtube’s broken copyright claims system. What we became is a leader in the next generation of mass entertainment, from streams to reviews to skits. But just like all the giants of entertainment over the years, we fell into the trap of the business practice of putting numbers before people. We began giving more time and respect to the bigger earners and began ignoring the creators who couldn’t generate revenue.
“As a business, that’s a good policy to have. Good numbers means we can pay our editors, admins, get new props and develop logos, maintain the website, and even raise awareness for causes that are worthwhile.
“But as a community of viewers, creators, and donators, this has led to divisions and disrespect beyond anything we would have expected from ourselves. And for that, we’re truly sorry.
“To that end, we are splitting Channel Awesome into two respective halves. To address the conflict between Channel Awesome the business and Channel Awesome the community, we are going to be having Mike Michaud, who’s passion is marketing the bigger names, manage the Channel Awesome Illinois Branch, which will cover programs such as Walter Benaziak’s top 5, the Orbit Report, Tamara’s Never Seen, and the Nostalgia Critic.
“For the producers and creators that made Channel Awesome an awesome channel, we will be developing the Channel Awesome Community branch, which will focus on building a roster of talent that can network and develop and their own fanbases.
“And we know that in order to rebuild the lost trust, we need a proper first step. That is why we are also using this message to openly and publicly offer the CEO of the Channel Awesome Community Branch to the admin that consistently remembered to respect the producers, Holly Brown.

“We know that we’ve taken many missteps and we know many people were hurt by our decisions, but we’re asking Holly and the rest of the creators. Give us one more chance to make our channel awesome.

“Sincerely, the administrators and officers of Channel Awesome”

  13. This was written by a truly brainless moron, no one could read this and believe they are coming out on top or even being depicted as a decent human being.

  14. XD Oh man, this is too funny.

  15. I made an account just to say you really fucked this up pretty bad. It’s a shame cause I used to go to TGWTG daily and watch videos. And im sitting here reading “your response” thinking WTF are you trying to accomplish here? So guess I’ll just enjoy watching this shit show dumpster fire burn and enjoy the lol’s. Thanks Mike….

  16. There is so much that ISN’T covered in this reply, and the replies are rather hollow for a number of them.

Also, that screengrab from the conversation with Lindsay Ellis includes a request to put up a song on iTunes due to popular demand, and that money is being lost because it’s not already there.

You know… that whole revenue lost complaint from so many of the grievances.

I’d already stopped visiting this site ages ago. This makes me sad that I came back at all.

  17. To whomever was tasked with writing this… clarification, let me give you a nickel’s worth of free advice:
“You don’t have to be brilliant, not being stupid is enough.”

Not acting like a blithering moron goes a long way, especially when your goal is to convince others to see things from your perspective.

    It’s been fun.

  18. A full 3/4 of your outside talent and 20K+ subscribers left you in the dust because of baseless lies?! You poor, poor dears…

  19. I have never been more disappointed in a group of people in my life. This is the worst thing you could have done. There was no way for you to attack the people who wrote the document, who’s stores are corroborated with other ex-producers, and come out looking good. This kind of doubling down after the non-apology is simply shameful. And you have nobody to blame but yourself.

  20. Burn in hell, Channel not so awesome. #DeleteTheChannel

    • What’s your explanation for firing human beings for being late to a Skype call. Not even a damn apology could you muster. Pathetic.

  21. Signed up just to say I’m so disappointed in you guys. I was a fan way back in the beginning and I fell out a few years back but I rediscovered that Channel Awesome was still around because of the doc. Your first response was a bit bad admittedly but I was willing to give you guys the benefit of the doubt because some of the allegations seemed a bit petty (albeit there is some serious stuff in there too.) Well consider this the tipping point.

Just say sorry. No regret that you felt that way. Just say sorry. I feel like those years of enjoyment I had when watching your site all those years ago is just tainted now. You guys should be better than this.

  22. Yup, I’m officially done with this place.

Your previous “apology” was awful, and this is somehow far far worse.

  23. You need a new CEO AND new PR people.

    • They fired their own PR (because she took a day off after surgery). They shot themselves in the foot.

  24. Even if, and this is a BIG if, but even if these were lies, it should serve as a warning to any higher-up not to piss off their underlings. They can and will find a way to settle the score with you, and all the lawyers and money in the world can’t protect you. You’re still down 3/4 of your outside staff and 20K subscribers and counting. I’d like to see CA recover from this and prosper as a wiser company, but at this point, I don’t know if it’s possible.

  25. To be perfectly honest, I am disgusted. But not even remotely by the Channel’s response, instead, it is these comments which I find appalling.
You want an apology. Why? An apology is merited, when the other party feels they’ve done something wrong, which is clearly not the case here. Therefore, those disagreeing need to attempt to show why this is wrong, instead of demanding an apology.
Whether it’s Mike Michaud or whoever else writing the response, they felt that they were not the ones in the wrong. Therefore, if you want any meaningful discussion, you need to prove your case, otherwise, you have no case without the backing up of any facts. I skimmed through Obscurus Lupa’s document and found nothing but baseless accusations, which are so characteristic of the currently prevalent approach of “Let’s accuse people of stuff, we do not need to prove anything”, which is simply BS. I have seen no proof of anything other than rather unpopular content creators lashing out at others more successful than them. Without proof, you have no case, and without a case, you most certainly deserve no apology. So stop your whining.

  26. Who thought this would make it better?

I have to know who thought this would make it better.

Who in their right mind could possibly think this would make it better?

  27. Annnnnnd Angry Joe just left.

  28. This really isn’t helping your cause guys! In fact, it’s adding fuel to the fire! They all just want an apology, nothing more! Not only are you going to piss off the accusers, but you’re going to lose a TON of fans!!!

  29. Angry Joe just quit over this, one of the last of the originals.

    • The_Madder_Hatter

      Just Brad left now

      • What about Guru Larry? Have you forgotten Guru Larry?

From what I understand, they’re rebranding the site to Channel Larry: Home of Guru Larry and… Guru Larry.

  30. This guy Michaud has to go. He’s a freaking cancer to everyone he’s around. Cut the root away and the problem dies.
