  1. Split on sacrum and profanum was always arbitrarily in case of religion. Most obvious example is that common people see sacred symbols like White Pentagram or Saint Peter Cross as profane due to misunderstanding of symbolism and loose association with occult.

    As for language matter. It basically depend on context. Profane things are part of life and so mature media need use profane stuff where they usually are profane. The issue is that exploit media usually targeting teens with maturity complex, tend to overuse profane as shortcut to “maturity” without being really mature. Best example of that is ironically modern DC. On the other hand real maturity outside being sometimes profane, it also is sometimes family friendly and truly mature person is recognized amongst many due to lack of fear of immaturity (what is immature after all).
