Hey, remember that show Step By Step? Me neither! But that’s never stopped me before!

About SomeJerkWithACamera

Join Some Jerk With A Camera on location at Disneyland, California (and occasionally other theme parks!) for a series of whacked-out, irreverently irrelevant digress-alicious trips through some of the best and worst attractions and paraphernalia theme parks have to offer!

  1. Crossover Princess

There are only two things I remember from Step by Step:

The time they went top Japan for a wedding a met Weird Al and the “Sailor Scouts”… though that might have been a bizarre Sailor Moon fanfic I read like 10 years ago…

Also the two episodes where met two idiots who thought they were Beavis and Butthead… That last one really happened… I’m not kidding…

Also you have to find a way to become the Vacation Critic again…

  2. Awesome review!
I agree with Crossover Princess. You NEED to find a way to bring the Vacation Critic back.
I’ve only seen a handful of episodes of this show on some channel I don’t remember.

I unfourtunatley remember step by step from the advertising on the hub saying what time they would show it and they would show clips from the show. It’s a surprise to see they got Suzanne sommer’s for this show considering that three’s company was trash(as what I’ve heard from people). But you could bring back the vacation critic if you wanted to(but it’s your choice, not mine so hey go and have fun at Disney world). Also since that man owned a mater tell him to go and crush mater at a scrapyard at least he’d make a ton of people who hate mater happy. But hey did the parents of those kids you killed burn done your house cause they probably were really mad at you? Did you also throw up after you rode the tea cups cause I’ll bow down to you if you kept in your throw up? Love the part where you go crazy had my laughing out loud in my head. Good review and can’t wait to see the last three parts to your retrospective(next is boy meets world if I’m correct which I am).

  4. I remember Step By Step as one of the sitcoms they only ever feature during the summertime TV off-ratings season back in the 90s.

  5. I enjoyed Step By Step, but while it is similar to The Brady Bunch (which I don’t remember), there’s some differences and gimmicks. However, this episode is from sometime after the show went downhill with Sasha Mitchell (my favorite character Cody) leaving. It was a long, complicated story that is better to look up rather than explain… Also, I don’t remember his replacement Flash because Cody was funnier. By the way, these “rip-offs” may be coincidental?

    • SomeJerkWithACamera

Flash was a “wacky neighbor” character brought in as basically a replacement for Cody. He didn’t last long – a couple of episodes before this, then this, then he was gone. I’m guessing Flash’s part in this episode was written with Cody in mind, but then when he left they had to improvise.

    • The guy that played Balki on Perfect Strangers replaced Cody the rest of the series as a french guy that worked for Carol at her beauty parlor. It’s as bad as it sounds.

  6. How did I miss Roseanne? I’d been waiting for that one, and somehow I missed it entirely. I’d watched Family Matters early, so I was waiting until I saw Roseanne to start watching again.

I mean, I was going to question why you decided to Step by Step before Roseanne, but I then I saw that Roseanne had already been done.

I’ve got the RSS feed; how am I missing stuff?

  7. That NO montage was epic! So glad you included Walter White in it. Breaking Bad is the greatest show of all time.

  8. Erica Nicole Jones

Damn how many shows went to Disneyland I just know you’re going to do Modern Family at some point and i’m definitely will watch it your videos are too damn funny

  9. YES! I love this episode! It was my favorite of the Disney World episodes and I loved the “Where your grandma has better sex” joke as well as the NO montage! Now what was this episode about again? Full House 2 or something right?

  10. This is hand’s down my favorite episode! Thank the Lord for pause buttons, or I’d laugh myself into a hernia…

The only thing I can guess as to why they didn’t use any actual Disney restaurants in the show is because God forbid Disney ever admit that even their cheapest food carts are out of the price range of the average wallet. Still paying off a turkey leg I got there 3 years ago…

    • SomeJerkWithACamera

…But they DID admit it. That’s what’s so fucked up: they completely 100% admitted that a restaurant on-property was, in the words of the characters, “really expensive.” They just GAVE THAT RESTAURANT A FAKE NAME.

I dunno, maybe it was a “favored nations” deal. Maybe every restaurant’s manager objected to being known as “the expensive one.”

      • I’m not sure if it was open at the time but I think that Victoria & Albert’s has “most expensive Disney restaurant” on lock-down. Hell, it’s the only one with a strict dress code.

      • Why did they even make up the damn restaurant in the first place? Back in the Full House episode and in the Boy Meets World episode, they showed the Coral Reef Restaurant, and back then it wasn’t cheap. I guess that Disney didn’t want Step By Step tarnishing their restaurants with its awfulness.

  11. Just want to say that you are really, really good. If there’s one thing I give even less of a crap about than Disney theme parks it’s probably insipid 90’s sitcoms, and yet these sitcom eps have been uniformly hilarious (except for the one a week or so back that seemed a bit by-the-numbers). But the rest of them have been amazingly entertaining & creative. Especially loved the “NOOOO!” montage. If you ever do an episode about something I’m actually interested in my head will probably explode.

  12. Unlike all the other ABC sitcoms / TGIF shows – I recall Step by Step existing, but absolutely nothing else. No characters, no stories, not even the theme song (New Kids Always comes to mind with that title).

  13. Cinnamon Scudworth

That “no” montage was the most amazingly well-placed sequence of clips I’ve ever seen and for the Internet that’s saying a lot. How long did it take you?

I remember another Step By Step “vacation” 2-parter a couple seasons before this one where they went to Hawaii, and the plot was just as light. It was an ad, just like all the Disney episodes were. This kind of episode happened all the time — and it wasn’t always Disney World. I had quit watching Family Matters by the time they went to Paris, but I suspect it was the same deal: “we’re so happy in Paris, la la la.”

I figure the destination would pay for most of the production costs if they portrayed the destination as positively as possible. I have no proof, but it’s my theory.

    • SomeJerkWithACamera

The hard part was assembling all the clips. Once I had all the clips I needed on my hard drive, the actual editing of the “no” montage only took a few hours.

  14. Why the hell is the MMPR Movie yellow ranger costume at Disneyworld?

    • I was wondering the same thing. I also wondered if they had the mannequin’s head bowed since the actress who played the Yellow Ranger died.

    • SomeJerkWithACamera

According to Wikipedia, Disney owned the Power Rangers from about 2001 to 2010, and I believe they still retain the theme park rights (though they don’t really use them anymore, though they used to have a Power Rangers meet-and-greet show at Disney’s Hollywood Studios). Anyway, that’s probably why they had the yellow ranger costume on display at a gift shop in DHS. No idea if the bowed head is an acknowledgement that the actress died.

  15. I meant to say the actress who played the ORIGINAL Yellow Ranger had died. Curse you, non-existant edit button!

  16. Hilarious as ever.

  17. I know this is kinda off topic but 111 hits in Australia is currently showing full house and they are going to start showing step by step soon, and judging by the promos there running ether Urkel was in one episode and/or they want Family Matters as well sadly there is no sign of them trying to get Roseanne.

  18. Damnit Somejerk!!! That I-5 Magic Mountain joke just made me lose perfectly good drinking water. CURSE YOU!

  19. Yes, this show was about as bad as a sitcom could get.

I remember, in one episode, they blatantly ripped off the plot of an old Happy Days episode. Even at eleven years old, I caught it.

  20. At last – the Big No! Thank you Jerk! I waited for that.

Seriously, this is a funny show. Keep ’em comin’!

  21. Hey Jerk,

Just wanted to say I love your videos! Found out how awesome you were when you crossed over with Oancitizen for the Beauty and the Beast musical and have been watching all your videos here ever since. These ABC Disney World episodes have been awesome as both nostalgia and an informative look at what a rip off most of them were.

I did want to ask though, where did you film that scene with the MMPR Movie Yellow Ranger suit behind you? Is that at Disneyland somewhere? Just curious as Disney hasn’t owned Power Rangers since about 2010 or so, so it seems unusual that it would be there in 2013.

    Keep up the great work!

    • SomeJerkWithACamera

That display of the Yellow Ranger suit was at a gift shop in Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida. I don’t know if it’s still there, but it was in September 2012, when I was last in Florida filming stuff. Maybe Disney still retains MMPR’s theme park rights and never bothered to take it down. Or something.

  22. I don’t even know why they bothered with a white Urkel. Urkel was tgifs biggest market guy. Hes even guest starred in step by step like 3 times. They might as well milked it & made him part of two shows. Yes family matters and step by step are in different states but Urkel friggin made a teleporter.

  23. 1:13 I couldn’t remember either.

15:24 I never got that either until you said something.

  24. Well one good thing, you forgot the movie Ghost Dad.
