The Sound of Music Live – 25 Days of Sharkmas

Tim & Beth go back to the beginning of NBC’s modern live musicals, with a classic show that’s lasted for decades, but a production that already looks dated. Except for the Nazis part.

About SharkJumping

Hosts Tim & Beth break down the best, worst and strangest TV shows to find out when they jumped the shark.

  1. As bad as this was (and I do think it’s bad, multiplied by the fact that I’m not the biggest fan of The Sound of Music anyway– not that’s it bad, I just couldn’t get into it), I thought Audra McDonald saved the show. I cried at her rendition of “Climb Ev’ry Mountain.” There’s a reason Carrie cried at the end of it…she wasn’t acting.

  2. Snorgatch Pandalume

Why is the captain’s fiancee wearing pants in 1938?

  3. That is why I love that SNL skit about “How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria” because as passive-aggressive as that song comes off (and don’t get me wrong I love that song) you have to wonder what Maria was feeling when she no doubt probably heard that in the Covenant . XD

  4. 1:06 Surprised you didn’t point out that was Julia Andrews as Cinderella. Was it just too obvious?

6:19-6:24 I was just like to point out that my father had a crush on Julia Andrews, but couldn’t handle the racier roles she did in later years under the direction of her than husband Blake Edwards. One of which was a major bomb.

7:16-23 LOL Checkout the expressions from Ariane Rinehart in this scene. She seems genuinely confusion about the song choice. It’s kind of hilarious!

11:08-11:23 What makes scene even sadder is that with just so little dialogue Ariane still seems a more competent actress than Carrie. Despite being about ten years younger and thus the right age to play the one in need guidance from a strong mother figure, she comes off as the more like the seasoned professional. Probably for having already acted in stage production of this story when she was ten! “I don’t need a governess,” indeed!

12:06 Never seen True Blood. Though he did seem to have more fun with the role than Christopher Plummer whose been notoriously embarrassed by his association with the film. Not saying I know he was having fun, he just doesn’t seem so willfully heavy.

14:20 Somehow I just knew you were going to zero in on that line.

  5. Frankly I was never that big a fan of The Sound of Music anyway and was just happy to see how they pulled it off. I wasn’t really expecting enough to be really disappointed. It had been so long since anyone had done something like this (at least in the USA) and I think that probably contributed to the high rating as much as the usual want to for at-home family entertainment. Now it’s no longer novel, so we’re not as easily to please.

Really looking forward to your take on Grease Live. That is easily may favorite of the new live musicals so far. Despite some of the “cough” problematic aspect of the play (which I see you already moving in on), I though they did a really good job of adjusting the story to improve upon some of those problems, while still capturing the original spirit that I love. Agree or not, I’m ready with more than THE WORD!

  6. Heil Hillary! By the way I can sing Edelweiss clear as a bell.

  7. She supports Ukrainian Nazis look it up as well as Obamarama Islamicist kiss-ass spreader. By the way Beth why are you a “Democrat” if you were homeschooled all your life?

  8. At least you have a wife Tim who belongs to you.

  9. Get some foreign history lessons you two slightly stupid, stooged ignorant global history deprived typical American couple. Seesh I’m like Caruso and Chaliapin compared to guy Moyer, no really you should see and hear me sing.

  10. Back when Underwood was on American Idol, we called her “Farmbot.”

  11. Lol omg we get it you hate trump! Jesus and why was beth acting like nazi supporters just started up when trump became preseident? Sadly there were some before he even started running. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t like trump either, but whining about it throughout this video was annoying.
