Oh thanbk you for trashing Sword Art. My fellow anime friends keep insisting this show is worth watching and I friggin hate it. Now I was pleasantly surprised by “The Seven Deadly Sins.” Went into that expecting Diet Studio Gibli and got Goku meets King Arthur and was like “F*** YEAH!”

I really wanted to like Sword Art Online. Strangely enough, my favorite parts were where the guy was trying to live a somewhat normal life inside the game. But that second season – I couldn’t even stomach it. I kind of wish the girl had just died; it would have been a tragic ending, but at least an ending.

Sword Art Online had tons of problems, but I enjoyed the first season well enough. Mostly due to some top notch animation. I watched the next season with high hopes, thinking that maybe they’d learn from those mistakes and build a better series. But unfortunately those “mistakes” became the focus and they, surprisingly quickly, started tossing out anything worth a damn, ie the nice kinetic action scenes, character imperfections, and actual stakes. Things spiraled WAAAY out of control development wise and then they made a story about AIDS. So bad. So so bad. And believe it or not, I started… Read more »

I got nine episodes into SAO before I couldn’t take anymore. It felt like I was watching a bizarre anime version of the “Twilight” saga… Like I’m supposed to be invested in these people because the plot says so.

To be fair Gonzop did publish Demon King Daimo and that was a great parody of multiple genres.

Gonzo actually has done quite a few good series. They had a rocky start early on with stuff like Final Fantasy Unlimited, Hellsing and Kiddy Grade (*shudder*), but they’ve also put out some pretty damn good work such as Samurai 7, Welcome to the NHK and Last Exile.

Samuraiko

Bring on the flames, I enjoyed Kiddy Grade. But I *ADORE* Samurai 7, so thank God I’m not the only one here who’s seen it.

> I enjoyed Kiddy Grade.

Go home Samuraiko, you are drunk.

And Last Exile was freaking awexome!

Last Exile is one of my all time favorites. It’s one I use to lure non Anime types into anime. The Napoleanic SciFi hooks them every time.

I have only seen ONE thing on this list. (SIN: The movie.) Because I enjoy the score.

Something I am surprised is *NOT* on this list is the LADY DEATH film. How a score THAT good, a cast THAT good, was wasted on a film THAT bad is beyond me.

I think that was not technically “Anime” under the more classic Western definition that Will seems to use.. It was a Western Property and show contracted to an asian house for production.

IIRC in Japan sexualization of children is basically normal to some degree. There is a rather complex set of social (and legal) regulations on the subject. Other cultures, y’know.

DMaster

I’m well aware of other cultures having different standards. Doesn’t stop me from calling something out for being profoundly gross.

Rastrelly

Something being profoundly gross is a subjective statement. Japanese consider many US habits as gross, or even grosser. In any case, I share your position, but it’s ridiculous to demand from other culture to change just because you disagree. They’re on their soil.

Boku No Pico will forever be placed i nthe guilty pleasures list in the world of hentai and anime. Most of the others I’ve seen on this list I never watched, but I still wanna give Ugly yet Beautiful world a shot.

If you’re a fan of self-inflicted pain, be my guest. It was one of the most miserable experiences I’ve had watching an anime. It was so aimless, and not even in a good “slice of life”, Ah! My Goddess sort of way. It was just… baaaad.

The Ugly Yet Beautiful World is an okay anime. I don’t get why people hate it so much….aside from the main character’s cousin who is a bitch, the rest of the show is fine.

I have seen “Reign the Conqueror”, for several minutes before I shut it off.
The animation was so bad that I just didn’t bother.

I actually like Code Geass R2. Sure it’s mostly because of how good ending is but still.

Also as far as Dance in the Vampire Bund goes manga is actually much better than anime.

So why did the animation studio take the first Hellsing anime so seriously? Probably because only a very few issues of the manga had been produced at the time, and they really had no clue what direction the series was trying to go. So they made stuff up. I liked the concept and atmosphere of it, but my chief problem was the inconsistency, plot holes, and the lack of an actual ending to the story. It’s pretty evident that, early on, they had some idea what was going to happen, but somehow lost their way after the midway point. I’ve… Read more »

Really sword art online? This list gets big #epicfail. I really enjoyed the series. Instead of worst drecks of anime we get hellsing, wicked city, gantz, Eva Dub? dance in the vampire bund actually pretty good once you ignore the creppy stuff. Samurai gun on list? Its not great but there are lot worse shows out there. Should have been on list Dragonball Z or FLCL or Paronia Agent some of the worst overrated garbage out there. Then there is Dracula sovereign of the damn, frankstein, end of evangelion, At least one is gilgamesh. Boring and bland characters. Plot that… Read more »

Wicked City is the only thing on this list I’ve seen, and I like it. I like the whole dark look of the thing, I like that it’s basically Men In Black but with demons instead of aliens, I like the James Bond vibe of the male lead, and I like Makie and her neon nails of death. Plus I like that it doesn’t take place in a high school, there are no dish-eyed, pig-tailed, marshmallow-headed, squeaky-voiced little girls with anger management issues, and there is nary a sailor suit to be seen.

I’m honestly kind of indifferent about the dub of NGE. True, I’ve only seen the 3 Rebuild movies and none of the other stories in the franchise, but of what I watched, it wasn’t that bad. It wasn’t amazing, but it wasn’t utter shit either. That being said, I’m so glad that I’m not the only one who was fucking confused by EVA 3.33. I went to see a screening of the film with a friend who is a huge NGE fan and after it ended, I just turned to her and said “Okay, what the hell just happened?”. The… Read more »

He really doesn’t understand what “no one should ever watch” means does he? Half of these shows either have a prominent place in the anime culture or are only classified as “unwatchable” because he’s squeamish about violence and sex. What about actually worthless anime like the Cardcaptor Sakura English dub that ruins the episode order and characters, the X/1999 movie or The End and Rebirth of Evangalion that are made worthless by the fact that you can watch a superior version of the story, or the originally voiced versions of Samurai Pizza Cats and Ghost Stories that were so generic… Read more »

You know I usually don’t do this, but when I see a picture from Neon Genesis Evangellion prominently displayed in the top left of the collage, I decided not to watch the video, but rather bitch about the “bait” in the comments, thus proving the bait was effective. (how meta of me!) Anyway, Neon Genesis Evangelion is an anime series everyone SHOULD see, because it de-constructs a lot of the tropes and patterns that the giant mecha genre where the reluctant young man saves the universe. It doesn’t pull punches and it challenges the viewer. I get that it has… Read more »

Well, if you had even bothered to watch a few minutes into the review, you would have seen that not only is NGE extremely low on the list, but it’s only for the English dub. Nobody is disputing Evangelion’s relevance or impact (or Second Impact (ba dum tish)) here. Perhaps if you had taken to heart some of those “changes of perspective” that the viewing of Evangelion provides, you would know that jumping to conclusions is not always a great idea.

Oh Gods I am ashamed at how many on that list I have seen.

As for “do not watch” type stuff that is somehow in my collections? Maybe Saber Marionette J? Key the Metal Idol, the Movie also takes a strange but strong 13 episode show in a similar vein to Serial Experiments Lain, and in a 120 minute finale takes it someplace just horrific and insane.

I liked Gantz, I thought the manga was great. The Anime ended too early and poorly to give it real credit. An anime that I think should be on this list is Elfen Lied. It includes many of the traits that you attributed to other bad anime such as incest, needless and over the top violence, and the sexualization of children.

You know, just once, I’d like to see someone try to portray SAO in a positive light. Like, seriously? Do people do their best to ignore anything even remotely good about it or something?

I love SAO. Most of the haters are wrong about it and try to make it out worse than it actually is. I admit the second half of season 1 is not great….but the rest of the franchise is quite enjoyable.

Notwithstanding the obligatory Sword Art Online defense comment, I will simply say Sword Art Online had an interesting premise and interesting characters. I enjoyed the story that was told, even though the second half was a little convoluted and just played for cheap drama. I came away from the first season that it was supposed to be an unlikely romance story and it kind of was in the end. It had problems, sure, but I still found enjoyment. With that out of the way, I’m surprised you didn’t place Pilot Candidate on the list. It was such a bad series… Read more »

I’m surprised the show “Master of Martial Hearts” isn’t on this list, it’s at the top of my “to avoid at all costs” list, that and Kodomo no Jikan, if you’re wondering that is, think Boku no Pico with little girls…yeah…

thatchickwithlonghair

thatchickwithlonghair

NO, Kodomo No Jikan is NOT “Boku No Pico with little girls”. Kodomo No Jikan is a study of child psychology; a story of an adult man surrounded by problem children with emotional baggage as he tries to understand why they act this way.

My top 5 Anime you should avoid 1: Master of Martial Hearts 2: Kodomo No Jikan 3: Knight Hunters Weiss Kruez Season 2 (English Dub) 4: Sensual Phrase (Kaiken Phrase) *Because the manga’s story was told SO much better, focusing on the girl and her relationship with the main singer guy where as in the anime it focuses solely on the band, and all the boring recording/marketing stuff, the main girl doesn’t even come in until halfway through!! and the series lasts for 44 episodes!! 5: Ghost Stories (English Dub) *I get so much hate for this one but that’s… Read more »

Re: Ghost Stories… you know, that one is a pretty divided topic from what I’ve seen. Will and I have both seen it and we think it’s brilliant, but you certainly have to be okay with some off-color humor in order to find any fulfillment from it. I recall a young lady from one of our panels at a convention who raised significant objection to the series because of their portrayal of Keiichiro, Satsuki’s younger brother, and the characters in the show basically shitting on him and calling him retarded on multiple occasions. She was quite offended by the discrimination… Read more »

Okay maybe I’m being a little too harsh on Knight Hunters. It was one of the first anime I watched not from TV or mainstream media, etc. I loved the first season and when I found out the second season (Eternity) came out I jumped at the chance to watch it. However, I quickly noticed the art style had changed dramatically and they recast several of the characters. I seem to remember Saiyuki: Reloaded got the same treatment (mainly a change in voices) I may go back and rewatch these two, but I will have to flip to the subbed… Read more »

THe moment Gantz ended up on this list after Alucard was there, I knew…
