They couldn’t reference Army of Darkness, for copyrights reasons. That’s why it’s not an S-Mart and that’s why AoD is never mentioned.
The events of AoD are alluded too in the final episode though.

Evil Dead 2 is the best movie ever +Evil Dead 2013 is awesome, and ash meeting mia would fit the tone of the show and its bipolar feeling and tendency to jump between characters.++ mia was so hot in that movie i thought i was going to die and if the show keeps doing well we may get the Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash movie
I think the remake is still a horror comedy. It IS much more horrifying, but think of the beats and timing of the scene where the guy slips on the girls cheek. It’s a gag ending in a prat fall, and it’s hilarious. I laughed so many times in that movie, and from things that were clearly intentional jokes, but fitting the tone of the remake, you laugh and then feel kinda gross about laughing cause it’s a cruel and disturbing joke. But the jokes ARE there.
