Apart from being an adaptation of Robin Hood, and Prince John (a lion) being the Big Bad, I can also see some parallels with the French tale “Reynard;” mostly in the fact that the hero is a fox (Robin Hood/Reynard) and one of the main villains being a wolf (Sheriff of Nottingham/Isengrim). Not sure if Disney was aware of the Reynard tale when they adapted Robin Hood in this manner, but it does make an interesting coincidence.
