People don’t get the beauty of sequels. There is a formula for just about any type of movie, which is even more simple then Joeseph Cambell’s monomyth. It goes like this, ‘get people to like a character, enough that you care about their fate, or at least don’t want to see them dead, then give them a problem to solve.’ The issue, and it shouldn’t be an issue, is that Hollywood is getting notoriously bad at getting us to like people. With sequels the job should be half done, they just have to avoid screwing up what’s already been accomplished and they could skip to step two.
So far, I already don’t hate these kids, and if they’re at least respectful towards the characters that gave me joy as a child, then the movie will probably be fine.
