  1. I think the claymation could also be a wink to Ray Harryhausen along with Rankin / Bass.

  2. If anything else this episode gets bonus points for having Neil DeGrasse Tyson voicing Waddles

  3. You haven’t played Super Mario 3D World. Peach is a really good character in that game, if a bit slow.

In fact, Peach is useful. (I wonder how many people got that?)

    • I did ๐Ÿ™‚ .

      Anarchy..

    • Really, Peach is pretty on top of everything with the exception of the 2D platformers, 64, Sunshine, and the Galaxy games:
In RPG and SPM she’s a party member, in PM1+2 she feeds Mario and co. intel (and almost escaped on her own), she’s in the same situation as the brothers in Inside Story, runs your base of operations in Partners in Times, [Spoilers] in Superstar Saga she was actually several steps ahead of everyone the entire game, she’s a playable character in 3DW and SMB2, she holds her own in all the Sports, racing, and most Party games, and she still kicks ass in every Smash Bros but the first one.

I really don’t get why everyone calls her useless.

Even discounting the stuff above, she still manages to run a pretty prosperous nation. Nobody bats an eye at “save the president” besides wondering why the Secret Service didn’t prevent it.

    • Also, I never got why Luigi is always seen as worse than Mario. Not only is he a better character overall(because Nintendo isn’t afraid to give him flaws) but he’s almost always the better choice in the games he and Mario are in. Examples of when Luigi was slightly different, though not really better, are the Mario and Luigi: RPG series and Smash Bros, and the ultimate example of Luigi being undoubtedly the best character is Super Mario 64: DS.

    • Which was her playstyle in Doki Mario. I guess that’s a benefit to 3D World: Even if you argue against Nintendo’s reasoning that the dream happened, this latest game happened in conscious reality.

    • I never expected a BrainScratch Commentaries reference in my Channel Awesome chat.

  4. according to Nintendo, Super Mario Bros. 2 did actually happen
it took place in a realm which Mario and his friends entered through their dreams
that’s why there are Shy Guys in later games

also, Peach is playable in Super Mario 3D World, and she controls allot like she did in Super Mario Bros. 2, only now in 3D!

  5. Rob should wear the sweater and the laundry basket at the same time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Peach does stuff in Super Mario 3D World.

  7. The key for the Vigenere cipher in this episode is “NONCANON,” so this episode is actually something along the lines of The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror specials. I wouldn’t have ever expected Gravity Falls to do an entirely non-canonical episode, but honestly I wouldn’t mind one of these non-canon anthology specials every season! That is assuming the show runs more than 3 seasons, which it might not, for good reason though: Alex Hirsch said in a Reddit AMA that he planned the main story of the series over the course of 3 seasons, or possibly 2 seasons and a movie, if he ends up thinking 3 seasons may be too much.

As much as I love Gravity Falls and want as much of it as possible I fully understand this decision, since I prefer quality over quantity as well. I’d rather not have the show drag out or go on any longer than it needs to, since it’s sadly rare that animated shows actually have a complete story and a real ending. Many of my favorite series have suddenly stopped with no closure (whether or not they were technically cancelled), or gone on WAY past the point where it should’ve ended significantly losing quality in the process.

    • The stories are non-canon but the intermissions are still canon because they are even referenced to in other episodes. The bottomless pit is referenced to at least once or twice throughout the series.

      • If by “intermissions” you mean the framing device with Stan and the “cheapskate” customer, that’s not canon either in this episode. I figured that was obvious since it’s pretty out-of-character for Stan to drug an innocent person and lock them inside a glass box, but I guess not?

Seriously, Stan wouldn’t do something like that, and even if he did Dipper and Mabel definitely wouldn’t be okay with it (as they are in this episode, Mabel playing tic-tac-toe with them during the credits and all). This entire episode is non-canon, not just the 3 stories.

  8. Princess Peach has actually been a playable character in a lot more games than she has been non-playable.

    PLAYABLE:

Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Kart, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Mario Party, Mario Party 2, Mario Tennis (N64 Version), Paper Mario, Mario Tennis (GBC Version), Mario Party 3, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Mario Party 4, Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Mario Party 5, Super Mario Fushigi no Janjan Land, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Mario Power Tennis, Mario Party 6, Super Mario Fushigi no Korokoro Party, Yakuman DS, Mario Superstar Baseball, Mario Kart Arcade GP, Super Princess Peach, Mario Party 7, Mario Kart DS, Super Mario Strikers, Super Mario Fushigi no Korokoro Party 2, Mario Hoops 3-on-3, Mario Kart Arcade GP 2, Super Paper Mario, Mario Strikers Charged, Mario Party 8, Itadaki Street DS, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, Mario Party DS, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Kart Wii, Mario Super Sluggers, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, Mario Sports Mix, Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Fortune Street, Mario Kart 7, Mario Party 9, Mario Tennis Open, Mario Kart Arcade GP DX, Super Mario 3D World, Mario Party: Island Tour, Mario Golf: World Tour, Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U

    NON-PLAYABLE:

Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, NES Open Tournament Golf, Yoshi’s Safari, Mario & Wario, Hotel Mario, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Mario Pinball Land, Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, New Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Galaxy, Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Super Mario 3D Land, New Super Mario Bros. 2, Paper Mario: Sticker Star, New Super Mario Bros. U, Mario & Luigi: Dream Team

    • And even in Superstar Saga, Partners in Time, Dream Team (and arguably Inside Story), she’s still an active character rather than just someone to rescue.

At this point, the POTUS has been held captive more times than the regent of the Mushroom Kingdom in games.

  9. The Waddles one was my favorite. ๐Ÿ˜€
“Yummy yummy, for my fat little pig tummy.” -Neil Degrasse Tyson

  10. Waddles DeGrasse Tyson makes this episode for me. There should be a plushie where you can squeeze his belly and get either Waddle grunts or NDT saying something scientific.

“Now the pig goes where every he can bring the light of knowledge to the darkness of ignorance.”

    Best cameo so far.

“Yummy, Yummy for my fat, little pig tummy.”

  11. “Where’s the heart?!”

The first part didn’t really do much for me; I may need to watch it again. The second with Waddles really reminded me of a Rick and Morty episode where the dog gained intelligence and attempted to enslave humanity. The stop motion one was hilarious, but there isn’t much for me to add. I wonder if the bridging segments between the shirts were supposed to canon, although the ending would be an uncharacteristically messed up thing for Stan to do.

  12. 04.36 well that does fit into my theory of this show existing because alex making a deal with bill.
I donโ€™t know if I like this one more than the last anthology episode but it is still pretty great, my favourite was probably the hand witch story, and my least favourite was the waddles story, mostly because I disliked how waddles giving up his intelligence was presented as a good thing.

Although that story did have candy screaming death to my enemies, so its not without its merits.

  13. Rob DID look like a character. Guys, not EVERY princess has to be a Mulan type.

  14. I’m surprised you didn’t mention the joke “Can I have my hands back now? There’s a certain gesture I’d like to share with you.” How did that get past censorship?

  15. This was probably one of the most random episodes of this show, but it’s partly what made it fun, i guess. I especially like the ending, with out poor avatar-character writing ‘help me’, while Mabel is trying to play with them.

But anyway, next episode is a big one! We will finally meet our Gravity Falls version of Simon Petrikov, YAY!

  16. Gravity Falls reminds me of a smarter version of the Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, especially with these vignette episodes.

  17. … You mean Marjory? The All-Knowing Trash Heap? (Nyaaaah!)

  18. Didn’t you notice that the old movie Stan puts on is rated “O for Old people” and also Stan’s line when he asks for his hands back “I’ve got a gesture I want to share with you”

  19. Black Magic eh? Always suspected something wonky with those stop animation folks.

  20. The Handwitch was voiced by Matt Chapman once again, sounding like the fifth member of the Team Girl Squad. That alone tickled me more than Neil Degrasse Tyson guest starring. The claymation tribute was awesome as well. I’m glad they took advantage of the episode being noncanon to make the Pines as evil as they possibly could. Stan drugging the POV character was legitimately unnerving.

  21. Personally, this is my favorite Gravity Falls episode

  22. I think my favorite joke in this episode has to be when they were being attacked by the clay cyclops and Soos says “Let’s escape by standing still.” but the Cyclops grabs him and he screams “IT DIDN’T WORRRK!!!”

I mean how can you not laugh at that?

  23. “Where’s the heart!?!”
Just wait till 95 when Toy Story comes out. Those claymation monsters should have seen that. And then show them Robot Chicken.

  24. I used to be so creeped out by those stop motion animation things as i got older not so much when i was younger.
