The Lion King 1 1/2 – Disneycember

It’s the Timon and Pumba movie. If you like Timon and Pumba, you’ll like this movie. If not…um, Hakuna Matata! Doug checks out Lion King 1 1/2.

  1. Good review. As a side note I believe that the Lions King movies all have ties to Shakespeare (sorta). The first being Hamlet, the second being Romeo & Juliette and this one being Rosecrans and Guidenstern are dead. Would be interesting to consider if you ever revisit this in NC or something similar

  2. I like Timon and Pumba just fine so I enjoyed this film, but yeah, it doesn’t need to exist.

  3. You mean the really poorly done TV show that tried to copy Nickelodeon? You really think that’s better?

I mean, I don’t disagree with you otherwise–I like them so I liked this movie–but that show was just awful.

  4. I loved those two. They never really gave thanks to the characters in the original movie, but in this one before Simba goes up Pride Rock, he hugs them both for saving him, raising him and helping in al the way. Best companions ever!

  5. I’m going to address one of your complaints Doug. Not everyone thinks like you. Not everyone doesn’t like Timon and Pumbaa. Clearly, they had a big enough fan base to get this movie made (which, I think the movie is pretty…eh) as well as their own show back in the 90s.

When did Doug say or imply that everyone thinks like him or that everyone disliked Timon & Pumbaa? ‘Cause I sat through the entire review and never heard any of that. He said that *he* wasn’t the biggest T&P fan and that those who do enjoy those characters should give this movie a watch; that’s the exact opposite of what you’re insinuating.

As for the Timon & Pumbaa show, I didn’t hate it, but it never really grabbed me. It didn’t feel like an authentic Lion King spinoff to me, it felt more like a discount Ren & Stimpy wannabe; those characters don’t work when you place them just any old where, and a lot of the jokes I just didn’t find very funny. I never saw Lion King 1 1/2, so I can’t comment on that; like a lot of these Disney sequels, it just didn’t look like something I’d be interested in.

The basic problem I have with the majority of these sequels is that the original films told finite stories which were completed; most of them simply didn’t call for sequels and so any attempts to give most of these films more story just comes off like a naked cash grab.

  6. I liked this movie as a kid only for how inventive it was.

  8. Timon’s song “That’s All I Need” is actually a revised version of “Warthog Rhapsody”, which was the song originally intended to be in “The Lion King” before it was replaced with “Hakuna Matata”.

  9. “Digga Tunna” is my go-to ditty for singing when I’m doing a lot of digging in Minecraft.

  10. Ugh. I bought this when it came out thinking it was going to be an actual movie and not just something akin of a deleted scenes/cutting room floor roll. Even after all these years I’m still pissed off that I spent like $25 for this crap lol

  11. Something that’s kind of soul crushing. This actually has the highest rating of any of these films on the IMDB and RottenTomatoes. I’ve never seen it myself. I agree that the cartoon was funnier. I was hoping you’d at least like this. Well, whatever floats your boat.
