Didn’t really care for Toy Story 2. It wasn’t bad but just didn’t capture the magic the first one had.

    • I disagree.

I think Toy Story 2 had a better story and a very clever conflict that didn’t rely on the overused “liar revealed” crutch for children’s movies.

  2. What a minute….Rocky didn’t win Best Picture (assuming you mean Academy Awards) in 1977….That went to Annie Hall. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/50th_Academy_Awards

  3. I have a question for every, what are some sequels that are better then the orignal?

    • Yeah, I remember going in knowing he was going to be the good guy.

Also, the Guns N’ Roses video for “You Could be Mine” showed key scenes that sort of also ruined the twist.

  4. pretty much nailed all the best ones. Some other sequels I can think of which exceed, or at least meet the originals would be, Dawn of the Dead (1978), Evil Dead 2, and Robocop 2.

    • Watch Robocop 1 and 2 again…

      Yeah…Robocop 1 is a tight, darkly satirical, ultra-violent thrill ride…

Robocop 2…gets bogged down in too many goofy elements.

      • Thing is, I did just re watch Robocop 2, and while I agree the original is the best, I found it to be a highly enjoyable sequel. Yes, they upped the goofiness, but I found it overall maintained the uncompromising dark satire of the original. Also the Cain robot is just plain cool. Robocop 3 is utter trash tho.

  5. Should have added Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows. While I enjoyed watching the first one. I feel that the sequel gave us so much more in the area of the Holmes lore and that they mastered both the rivalry and the respect that Holmes and Moriarty had for each other.

  6. You were right about one thing with star wars with your comment that could just re tell the original with out and consquence. They did that with the force awakens

  7. how polite of you not to spoil a movie that has been out for over 30 years 😀

  8. i hope doug doesnt review alien 3 … that film is very underrated and doesnt need more people hating on it

  9. I’d add that “The Road Warrior” is a great sequel too, and “Star Trek: First Contact” is a great sequel to the mediocre “Star Trek: Generations”.

“Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade” is also good, although…not quite as good as “Raiders”. And while both were rather campy, most would argue “Spider-Man 2” was far superior to the original “Spider-Man”. (Seems “Spider-Man 3” destroyed everyone’s memory of that…)

  10. Hmm, before I even watch this I wonder wtf is going to be on it. I can only name like five great sequels. City Slickers 2, Terminator 2, Aliens, Wrath of Kahn, and Dark Knight Rises. Wait 6, Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

  11. My Top film sequels:
    10. The Godfather, Part II
    9. Tron Legacy
    8. The Hobbit: An Unexpeceted Journey (if that doesn’t count: Dersolation of Smaug Extended)
    7. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest
    6. Star Trek: First Contact
    5. Mad Max: Fury Road
    4. Alien³
    3. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
    2. The Empire Strikes Back
    1. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

  12. Wolfgang Von Frankenstein

Bride of Frankenstein is literally my favourite movie of all time. I’m so fucking happy it made this list 😀

  13. A great list but I’ll comment on a couple that I disagree with.

Rocky 2 was better? That definitely goes against the grain. Most people consider the original Rocky to be the best of the franchise but even then I feel as though Creed and possibly Rocky Balboa are both seen as better than Rocky 2.

As someone whose not big on LotR’s I still consider The Fellowship to be the only great entry in the franchise. 2 and 3 have plenty of spectacle but its so overdone I just get bored and my mind drifts off. You need to CARE for an action sequence to matter and in many of these you really don’t. Beautiful vistas, breathtaking views, check. Do I care about army x or y fighting for reasons that weren’t exactly made clear to the viewer? No. I’m certainly not invested enough to see it the 2nd, 3rd or 4th time as the trilogy drags on.

The Dark Knight….really? Don’t get me wrong, that movie has HUGE historical significance and I LOVED it the first 2 times I watched it but did you rewatch it going into this list? Because that movie does NOT hold up well. It’s basically Heath Ledger being amazing with a ton of mediocre to sometimes boring filler surrounding him. I didn’t think this at the time but if you revisit those movies it is clear as day that Batman Begins is the vastly superior film.

  14. I was honestly expecting D2:The Mighty Ducks to be on the list, but still nice list. Although I prefer 2 over 1

  15. Snorgatch Pandalume

No, Empire wasn’t just a retread of the first movie that took no chances and did nothing new, and neither was Return of the Jedi. Even the prequels–whatever other flaws they may have had–tried to avoid doing that. We had to wait for The Force Awakens to get a movie that shamelessly copied the original. But what do you expect when you’re making a movie solely to appease whiny, crybaby fanboys who bitch and moan about how George Lucas raped their childhoods and what happened to the Star Wars that I used to know?
    HAPPY NOW??????????????????????

  16. thatchickwithlonghair

LOVE Return of the King and Empire. Good choices.

I know you already touched on it but The Rescuers Down Under is, for sure better than The Rescuers. 😀 by like a lot.
